National BBQ Week may be wrapping up, but staying safe around the grill is a year round responsibility for all of us 🌞

With the recent warm weather, we’re reminding everyone that a great BBQ is a safe BBQ. Here are three simple tips to keep your celebrations fire‑safe all year long:

✅Always place your BBQ on flat, non‑flammable ground away from sheds, fences, trees, and garden furniture.
⏱️A moment away is all it takes for a small flame to become a serious fire, never leave it cooking unattended.
❎Never put hot ashes straight into a dustbin or wheelie bin, they could melt the plastic and cause a fire.

Recently, there has been a number of serious open water emergencies in the UK.

Even on warm days, the water remains dangerously cold beneath the surface. That sudden drop in temperature can trigger cold water shock, causing you to struggle with breathing and staying afloat.

What you can’t see is just as dangerous: strong currents, sudden drop‑offs, and hidden debris.

We strongly advise everyone to avoid entering open water unless it is a clearly designated swimming area. Your safest choice is not to enter at all.

Earlier this month, crews from West Ashland Green Watch were invited to Rewley Road Fire Station by colleagues at Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service to carry out a breathing apparatus drill. 🔥

Our firefighters ustilised this realistic scenario to sharpen their skills and strengthen teamwork and communication with a neighbouring Fire and Rescue Service. Regular, practical training ensures our crews are best prepared to respond when our communities need them most.

If you will be near rivers, lakes or the coast, take extra care around open water. Even on hot days, cold water shock can happen suddenly, so please stay cautious 🌊

If you see someone in difficulty:
📲Call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Service
💧Encourage the person to float on their back
🏊Throw rescue equipment if available
❎Never enter the water yourself to attempt a rescue

Entering the water could put you at risk from cold water shock and strong currents. Wait for our crews to arrive, they have specialist training and equipment.
