Parasisi is a searing reflection on how colonial legacies persist, etched into lands and bodies.

In the words of directors Zaide Bil and Sebastien Segers, its goal is “to change the way we view gold and its value, Indigenous sovereignty, and post-colonial projects that have never truly ended - confronting Western audiences with our impact as powerful intruders on fragile, Indigenous societies.”

Parasisi premieres on April 24th at Hot Docs, with additional screening on April 25th.

What does it mean to carry histories that never truly left?

Each year, illegal gold mining along the Lawa River releases 50,000–80,000 kilograms of mercury into the environment - children growing up with it already in their bodies. How do the Wayana people, now fewer than 2,000, live with these, as they call them, parasisi?

Zaïde Bil and Sébastien Segers craft a visually stunning, profoundly intimate documentary Parasisi, revealing how centuries-old forces still threaten Indigenous identity - and how moments of care, connection, and humanity continue to endure. Parasisi will have its world premiere on April 24 at Hot Docs, with an additional screening on April 25.
