🚨🌳 Overriding Private Interests Or Protecting Biodiversity?
📰 In Southern Italy, Porsche sought to clear 200 hectares of protected forest to expand its test track — invoking EU rules meant to safeguard human health and public safety. The catch? The project was overwhelmingly private.
The Bosco d'Arneo, a Natura 2000 site in one of the Mediterranean's most desertification-hit regions, narrowly avoided destruction. Local authorities suspended the controversial ruling after the European Commission stepped in — but the agreement was never formally cancelled.
This is what happens when the language of the common good is stretched to serve corporate interests — and why communities on the ground matter. 🇪🇺🌿

___
🇬🇧 🎯 After data, Day 2 of the Fair Funds, Fair Future workshop brought us into the field of local investigative journalism.
With Luciano Manna, we uncovered the reality behind VeraLeaks and the challenges of turning data into public-interest exposes. Participants then took action, developing investigative leads to track EU funds for the green transition.
The Taranto workshop is over, but the real work begins now: who took part in the workshop can now pitch and investigation and could win a grant and professional mentoring!

🚨 Dream Homes or Empty Plots: Behind Bosnia’s Land Sales to Gulf Buyers
📰 Lush valleys. Quiet villages. The promise of a villa whose value will multiply for years to come. That's the pitch being made to buyers from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and across the Gulf. 🏡
The investigation found a very different story on the ground — agricultural and forest land stripped of trees, divided into plots, and sold as "construction land" to buyers thousands of miles away.
This isn't a handful of rogue deals. It appears to be a systematic business model — and the locals who once owned that land are watching it disappear.

📢 The European Cross-border grant programme's 2nd funding cycle closed today. But there will be another 2 rounds in 2026 and 2 in 2027.
🗓️The next deadline is on July 30th at 13:00 CET.
The programme is designed to foster expert-reviewed journalism, supporting collaborations between freelance journalists and media-organisations eager to investigate issues (and solutions) affecting Europe.
A project can also have a broader international angle, uncovering complex connections in a globalised world. There are no restrictions on the subject. The only condition is that 80% of the budget goes to applicants based in the EU.
👉 Find out more about the eligibility criteria for such projects: https://www.journalismfund.eu/european-cross-border-grants
📞 Do you need guidance to strengthen your application ? Book a pre-application meeting with us before you submit! 👉 https://calendly.com/journalismfund/ecbg-pre-application-sessions

This event on May 19th 2-3pm CET is the wrap-up session for our Expert-reviewed Journalism webinar series. Sign up here: https://t.ly/aIe-z
🤝Do you have questions about how a team of journalists can optimally collaborate with subject-matter experts to deepen their investigative project?
🏹 Experts can help make sense of data, verify methodologies and ensure explanations of technical knowledge is accurate. Yet Scientists need reassurance that their reputations won't be compromised, whilst journalists must demonstrate expertise and preparation when engaging with expert partners.
Developing a collaboration requires building trust and ensuring editorial independence.
The speakers will share their experience, lessons and best practices to carry out expert-reviewed journalism.

A project can also have a broader international angle, uncovering complex connections in a globalised world. There are no restrictions on the subject. The only condition is that 80% of the budget goes to applicants based in the EU.
