A look back at the @unifor_official installation at Milan Design Week 2026, featuring our Giuditta and MTM – Made to Measure furniture series. Highlights included MTM pieces designed for table tennis, set within an installation against the backdrop of our project for the Fondazione Feltrinelli, activating the outdoor space along Passeggiata Pasternak.

MTM is governed by a twelve-degree geometry, often used in woodworking for stability, giving each piece a clear, confident stance. The entire system is developed from this flexible and scalable constructive principle, which defines the inclination of the legs and is echoed in the bevelled edges of the tabletops.

Magie du Bois, created in collaboration with @martasalaeditions, is presented at Salone Raritas — @isaloniofficial’s new platform for collectible design. The collection celebrates wood craftsmanship through four distinct families: Meninas, Velázquez, Armory, and Shaun.

The Meninas, a set of pentagonal upholstered chairs, were designed to accompany the Velázquez table, which can be easily reassembled at two different heights. Both were developed as part of our project for the fumoir of the @grandhotellestroisrois in Basel.

Originally created for the @parkavearmory in New York, the Armory tables and chairs embrace the simplicity of traditional wood joinery techniques, resulting in robust and practical furniture pieces.

The Shaun chair has been in development for over a decade, first designed for a café in Japan. The original idea for the chair was to reduce a soft chair to its minimum – two pillows, one as a seat and the other as a back, are attached to each other invisibly, almost magically balancing on each other and simply supported by four legs.

With @unifor_official, we present two furniture series during Milan Design Week, developed through specific needs in our architectural projects.

‘MTM – Made to Measure’ began as a standing table prototype for our office. Flexible and easily dismantled, the system was scaled to produce different pieces: from a dining table to a coffee table, a sofa to a bench, a sideboard to a console — even a ping pong table. Employing a twelve-degree geometry, often used in woodworking for stability, gives elements a clear, confident stance. Four beams slot together at the structure’s core, a contemporary take on the castle joint. Materials include solid wood with glass and stone inlay, polished steel, and sustainable cork leather, developed for benches in the Memphis Art Museum project.

‘Giuditta’ is a series for leisure and dining, originally conceived for Villa Roccabruna at the Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como that references regional furniture and the villa’s walnut millwork. The design reduces classical Italian typologies to their essential structural and formal elements. Giudutta has a robust and elegant profile, with a signature S-shaped armrest that carries through to the outdoor version in polished stainless steel.

Both collections grew out of a longstanding collaboration with UniFor. They are on view at the UniFor showroom for Milan Design Week 2026 at Viale Pasubio 15 from 10–6. The installation at Spazio UniFor is by @studioklass.

An inside look at the process of making the Hong Kong Stool.

The stool was designed for the M+ Museum in Hong Kong and manufactured in Switzerland by @vonrickenbachswissag. Produced in Muotathal, the piece is the product of state-of-the-art CNC processes employed by the carpentry workshop to precisely craft each stool from solid wood.

The design draws inspiration from the archetype of traditional Asian wooden gates. It offers a subtle reference to their distinctive form while evoking the long-standing woodworking traditions of Asia. For MATTER and SHAPE 2026, a limited edition of the stool was produced, combining walnut and ash woods.

Herzog & de Meuron Objects is at MATTER and SHAPE 2026 in Paris, running until March 9. Our booth showcases the Hong Kong Stool, originally conceived for the M+ Museum.

The installation focuses on the flat-packed components and assembly of the stool — a wooden puzzle using traditional Asian dry-jointing techniques and a homage to Hong Kong’s towering skyline. Visitors are invited to try assembling the stool themselves. This limited edition, combining a mix of walnut and ash woods, is available online as well.

The Hong Kong Stool resulted from the design process for the M+ museum in Hong Kong. Influenced by the archetype of traditional Asian wooden gates, the stool is a subtle nod to their characteristic form, alluding to ancient Asian traditions of woodworking.

It is a logic puzzle that you can build and re-build, the result a robust solid Object. The whole construction is fastened by one wooden spike that connects all separate components in a single move, like a Chinese wooden puzzle. Dryjointing gives it a naturally wobbly character.

The stool is also a contemporary design; one that explores the threshold between analogue and digital. Originally built out of steamed bamboo, a local wood in China, its milled and rippled surfaces evoke the texture and character of bamboo sticks. This collection continues to use local wood, such as ash and walnut, in keeping with a sustainable approach.

For MATTER and SHAPE 2026, a special limited-edition series Droite et Gauche combines a mix of walnut and ash woods.

In 2011, H&dM embarked on a collaboration with Horgenglarus to create a custom chair series for @volkshausbasel. The Belair chair continues this working relationship — its design is sleek and minimal, carving away as much wood as structurally possible for a light and sculptural form.

The chair features a moulded plywood seat with legs and seat frame in solid bentwood. Belair comes in multiple finishes and is sold in sets of two matching chairs. The Belair Chair is now available at hdmobjects.com
