Hackney Archives
Preserving Hackney's history to help people explore and share the borough's rich past.

So...
Monday I did a thing.
My first ever (well officially anyways) guided tour. And, did it in my neighbourhood.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and I think the attendees did too. Of course, there's room for improvement, however the opportunity to speak my truth amongst many other truths is important, nay necessary.
And what a year to start singing! #savoy100
Hackney is home to me. Renaissance Harlem is heart home to me.
Lenox Avenue Harlem is not Chatsworth Road Hackney and vice versa, but, there are more similarities than differences (to coin a phrase). So I, am going to lean into those 😊.
Anyhoo.
Thanks @hackneyhistoryfest @hackney_society @archiveshackney for your work in putting the festival together.

📀💿 We are delighted to invite you to Resonant Matter, a new exhibition at London College of Fashion curated and produced by CfFC Interim Director Caroline Stevenson, Luke Turk (@luketurk) and Asha Hall-Jones, and featuring Diego Benalcazar and Rachael Finney (@crisapsoundarts ), The Deosil and Widdershin Soundsystem, Jason Jules (@garmsville) Sir Collins Archive (@archiveshackney , and Tim and Barry TV (@timandbarry). 💿📀
🔈Resonant Matter explores the spaces and scenes through which sound, fashion and collective cultures take shape across London. Through archival storytelling and immersive installations, the exhibition traces underground networks - from pirate radio stations and street protest to sound system cultures and club nights - where aesthetic codes are shared, adapted and performed, producing distinct forms of style, music and cultural expression. By tuning in to these practices, the exhibition considers how sound and fashion move together, shaping identities, solidarities and moments of collective resonance across the city.🔈
🔈Resonant Matter forms part of The Music is Black Festival, an East Bank–wide programme celebrating @vam_east inaugural exhibition The Music is Black: A British Story.🔈
💥Please join us on April 30th 5-8pm for a female-fronted pop, rock & disco DJ set with Seena Shamsavari @thatsparrowboy , celebrating iconic Black divas at East Bank, and make a zine with Eva Dieteren, imagining what the future will sound like. 💥

A history of the Hackney Design Awards - celebrating the borough's best loved buildings
Matt Payne works for the Conservation, Urban Design & Sustainability Team at Hackney Council and will be delving into the archives of the Hackney Design Awards to celebrate some of the borough's best loved buildings, which have either won or been shortlisted since 2004.
The talk will include insights from former judges and guest speakers will also share their favourite Hackney buildings and what it is they love about them.
Following the talk, the audience will be invited to reflect on new buildings that might be potential winners in the 2026 Design Awards, launching later in the year.

Who were the Exploding Galaxy? Were they.
* a hippie ballet troupe?
* a confluence of transmedia activators?
* Britain's answer to anarchy in dance? * a brave rebuttal of schizoid aesthetics?
See what you think, in the Festival's first ever showing about those galactic activators known as The Exploding Galaxy. Tickets from The Rio.
