Meet Cesar Garcia @zuaycreatex — our featured artist for April! Based in San Bernardino, California, Cesar is a talented craftsman deeply influenced by his Oaxacan upbringing.

SUBSCRIBE BY 3/31

➕Read Cesar’s FULL BIO➕
Cesar Garcia is a craftsman based in San Bernardino, who prefers working with printmaking techniques such as xylography, pyrography, stencil and airbrushing. He was raised in Oaxaca, Mexico and has always been fascinated by its Zapotec heritage, ever since he was a child. Most of his artistic influences come from his constant interaction with the rich and vibrant multicultural universe created by the many ethnic groups that coexist in Oaxaca.

In 2022, he became an artist in residence at Estudio Aire and began hosting a series of bilingual workshops for youth and adults and was able to create his biggest project to date alongside the help of local artists who later helped him create “Grafica Nocturna,” a collective focused on developing art applying printmaking techniques to promote and preserve these practices. Some of his pieces have been exhibited at the Artlands in Redlands, the Orange Show Annual exhibit in San Bernardino, the Cheech Marin Center for the Arts in Riverside, the Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro, the Ontario Museum of Arts and Culture, the Brand Library and Art Center.

➕About MOON RABBIT➕
When I was a kid I used to read a lot, especially tales and stories that explained how everything was created, and the one that always captivated me was “The coyote and the rabbit” legend. In that story the rabbit was always playing jokes and deceiving the coyote to escape from it. Once the rabbit was cornered with no other place to hide, he climbed to the moon using a stair and became one with it, and that is the reason the coyote is always howling to the moon, and why every time you look at it you can find a rabbit resemblance on its surface. In another legend, the rabbit was transformed into the moon by the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl as a way to thank its sacrifice by offering itself to feed the god.

Commissioned woodcut piece in process for an upcoming event, honoring the work made by the field workers in the United States, whose work most of the time is under appreciated. Did anyone in your family work in the fields? I’m pretty sure a lot of our parents/ relatives did. More progress update is on the way.
