Opening night of Yusuf Sevinçli’s photography exhibition “REPUBLIC”
The exhibition will remain on display until 14th April 2026
Visiting hours 13:30-20:30 Monday-Saturday
We look forward to welcoming you
Yusuf Sevinçli’s photographs do not simply “show” the island, but make visible a familiar state that has seeped into it. Even in its most recognisable locations, the island reappears from an interior perspective, creating an internalised sense of closeness for Cypriots and for those who have lived on the island for a long time. As a result, the relationship the exhibition establishes with the viewer becomes not a narrative, but a form of contact embedded in everyday life—one that does not rely on nostalgia. As the artist himself puts it, the work “drifts rather than declares.”

Welcome!
"In some geographies, history is not told like a story; it is carried more like a shadow. Cyprus is often like this: daily life goes on, the light changes, the sea remains where it has always been; it is also one of the rare places where the sky can be watched at its most beautiful — and yet something never fully comes into focus.
"Yusuf Sevinçli’s REPUBLIC series, presented to viewers in the exhibition of the same title at Art Rooms, approaches precisely this language of ambiguity: it does not speak plainly, but rather circles around what remains unspoken. Sevinçli’s photographs do not simply “show” the island, but make visible a familiar state that has seeped into it. Even in its most recognisable locations, the island reappears from an interior perspective, creating an internalised sense of closeness for Cypriots and for those who have lived on the island for a long time. Upcoming group exhibition at @istanbulmodern
Panaroma:Dreams and Places curated by @celenkbafra and @dammitdemet
A selection from my new series REPUBLIC will be on show from 19.02 to 18.10 2026.
An excerpt from the exhibition catalogue by @refikimo and @serdarimo:
'Sevinçli’s “REPUBLIC” series addresses the heavy – yet often invisible – traces of Cyprus’s modern history within a dark atmosphere grounded not in direct testimony but in intuition and emotion. The artist places at the center of the work the island’s feeling of “suspended time;” he photographs a state of “now” shaped by the unresolved weight of the past – seemingly calm yet quietly accumulating tension. Over years of visits, he observes the island’s structure woven with borders, the
ghostlike emptiness of divided cities, the pressure of military surveillance, and the sense of confinement embedded in everyday spaces.
His dark, grainy, and fragmented language reads this geography not as a linear story but as an inter-temporal space, a state of mind existing between past and present. Pointing
to both a historical and psychological rupture, “REPUBLIC” invites the viewer to confront once again this quiet yet deeply layered island of the
Eastern Mediterranean, shaped by inherited fractures and contemporary fissures.'

ATÖLYE | WORKSHOP
ACILI BİR FOTOĞRAF ATÖLYESİ
Yusuf Sevinçli @yusufsevincli
25-26-27 Ekim 2024
Son birkaç sandalye için link bio’da!
🦢
🦌
Bu atölye, Avrupa Miras Günleri kapsamında, Institut français Türkiye’nin davetiyle Galeri Nev Ankara’dan Deniz Artun’un küratörlüğünde, Fransız Büyükelçiliği bahçesinde devam eden Necla Rüzgar ve Yusuf Sevinçli’nin “Hinterland / Ardülke” sergisine paralel olarak düzenlenmektedir.
This workshop is being organized as part of the European Heritage Days, by invitation of the Institut français Turkey, and in parallel with the “Hinterlan / Ardülke” exhibition by Necla Rüzgar and Yusuf Sevinçli, curated by Deniz Artun from Galeri Nev Ankara, currently on display in the garden of the French Embassy.
