REISSUE OF THE WEEK: 'Mouth By Mouth (2024 Remastered Edition)' by His Name Is Alive

We revisit a record from the Warren Defever-led expansive dream pop group as 4AD bring back a trio of albums complete with remastered audio.

Returning this week alongside ‘Home Is In Your Head’ and ‘Livonia’, we ultimately went for their third album as it hears them at their wide-ranging best.

An ambitious and sprawling collection boasting seventeen tracks which hop between and blend dream pop, shoegaze, post-rock, indie, lo-fi, ambient pop, and art rock, ‘Mouth By Mouth’ could very well be Defever’s opus.

40 years ago i started recording the songs that would end up on Livonia, it took about 4yrs and a buncha tapes sent back and forth from my parents basement in Livonia to London, where Ivo Watts-Russell mixed, remixed and eventually produced our debut album that was released on 4AD in 1990. The British press called it “A miracle, a mirage, a thunderbolt, a truly wonderous, wonderful, wondering music that deals with dread and dilemma,” “Beautiful, grotesque, unfathomable; somewhere between a dream and a nightmare." and “A maze of unexpected noises; a gilt-edged puzzle box of melodies refracted through a prism”. @4ad is reissuing Livonia on vinyl and cd on May 8, 2026 pre-order is available now, link in bio.
