We just moved over to highland park and have been slowly wandering our way up through Mount Washington. There’s something about these hills… the streets curve in ways that make you feel a little lost (in a good way), and every corner has a house with its own personality. About a block away from the Moorish Revival triplex, I posted about recently, is this stunning duplex on Harper. Built in 1936, it feels like a completely different mindset. Where earlier buildings leaned into fantasy, borrowing from North African and Mediterranean styles, this one moves in the opposite direction. Simpler, more direct, almost stripped of reference.

The curved balcony, horizontal lines, and wraparound windows feel designed for light and air rather than ornament. It’s striking to see them this close together, within a decade.

On this block, you can really feel that change over time.

This is a 1926 triplex built in the Moorish Revival style, from the pre-WWII era when Hollywood architecture was intentionally theatrical.

This part of West Hollywood (Sweetzer, Waring, Orlando, Rosewood) was built during the silent film boom, so a lot of housing for studio workers and artists borrowed from romanticized Mediterranean and North African motifs. The shadows, small windows, and courtyard-like layout weren’t accidents, they created privacy, kept interiors cooler before AC, and gave residents a sense of escape right in the middle of the city.
