On September 1, 1939, German forces launched a deliberate and unprovoked attack on Poland, opening fire at Westerplatte and marking the beginning of World War II. From the start, this was to be a different kind of war—one not only of conquest but also of annihilation, driven by Hitler’s vision of expansion and “living space” for Germany. WWII veteran Charles Brooking visited his museum last week from Wapwallopen, Pennsylvania. Brooking joined the US Navy in January 1945 and served as a .50-caliber machine gunner on PT boats in the Pacific, where he saw action at Guadalcanal and the Philippines. Brooking assisted in shooting Japanese kamikaze planes down before they hit US ships. By August 1946, Brooking returned home to the states and was discharged from active duty as a Gunner's Mate Second Class, remaining a part of the Naval Reserve until 1954. Thank you for your service, Mr. Brooking!
