WILLIE IS A NEW RAW, SQUARE, SELF-SUPPORTING, ECLECTIC ART SPACE BASED IN ZAANDAM. WILLIE IS FAMILY OF VZL CONTEMPORARY ART

Titled Within a Play unfolds as a double-location exhibition framework shaped by the unfinished experimental theatre piece Play Without a Title by Federico García Lorca. In this historical work, the theatre itself becomes the subject: a meta-narrative in which boundaries between stage and life begin to dissolve. Using this reference as a methodological point of departure the show proposes an infrastructural drama that unsettles fixed narratives and foregrounds the conditions that shape the present.

Schizoponic Archive Collective
By Malou van der Veld
Is a collection of audio recordings made in different parts of Western European cities. Inspired by Soundscapes of Modernity, it aims to create a personal soundscape archive of what life in her surroundings sounds like.

One More Time with Feeling (!) (2017-2020)
By Karin Iturralde Nurnberg
Is a series of videos that start with the prompt:
<< I really like what you just did. Could you please do it again for me to film it? >>
Re-enacted scenes, movements or situations
performed by people that Karin encounter’s in her day-to-day life across different cities in Europe and Latin America. These actions she finds touching, absurd, strange or stereotypical of life in western infrastructures; for some reason they call her attention.
To make the videos she first let the actions end,
then she approaches whoever was doing the action with a description of their recent moves, like a script, and ask them if they’d like to perform it again for her to film it.
Sometimes she suggests a slight change and direct the film. Sometimes they do.

Star Me Up | a closer look
Old mattresses, upside down floor tiles, fireworks remains and a falling-apart sun blind are some of the materials that came together in my one day studio exhibition. These objects all hold traces of their past use; textures, residues, and intimate details of bodily presences. I’m drawn to these overlooked, worthless, dirty, damaged or even repulsive materials because of their ability to reveal the fragility of life, and the suggestive qualities they contain.
To me, they are all carriers of meaning and I use them to reflect on the passing of time, consumption, value-making, death, decay and care. Through carefully arranging, shaping and repurposing these objects, I invite the viewer to consider them differently, drawing attention to how value, meaning, and purpose are constructed in a world where sustainability and conscious care have become urgent.

Star Me Up | Installation shots from my one-day studio exhibition at @willie_creative_space
Over the past three months, I’ve been working in the Willie Project Space, exploring the traces we leave behind. Old mattresses, floor tiles, dead plants, and fireworks found their way into the studio, becoming part of sculptures and installations that reflect on material, use, and value.
Last Sunday, I presented this work in a one-day studio exhibition, the final day in the space before I move to Finland for my next residency. It was great to see visitors engaging with the work, moving through the materials and installations, and noticing everyday objects in a new context.
Thank you to everyone who came by, for taking the time to explore the work and the space, and for sharing thoughts. I also want to thank Willie for hosting and supporting this project over the past months. It’s been a great place to develop and experiment 🤍

Star Me Up - one day studio exhibition by Sara Bjarland
Date: Sunday 8th of February, 15-19h
Location: Willie Project Space, Schellingweg 15, Zaandam.
For the past three months, Sara Bjarland has worked in the project space at Willie. Before moving out, she will present her work in a one day studio exhibition on Sunday 8th February.
Sara is interested in the material traces that we leave on the planet. In her sculptures and installations, she uses discarded objects to reflect on issues like overconsumption and pollution, death, decay and care. While working at Willie, old mattresses, floor tiles, dead plants and firework remains have found their way into the studio. Sara treats these objects with care and attention, viewing them as carriers of meaning which can reveal something essential about how we live and the fragility of our existence. By including these worthless materials in her work, she also reflects on value-making and the backside of consumer society.

This Saturday was the Sybren Hellinga Keunstpriis exhibition at Kunsthuis SYB. We are so proad Karin Iturralde Nurnberg is one the five nominees.
Karin Iturralde Nurnberg created a homely space to rest and dream, she asks: what can arise in vulnerable moments? For example, at the immigration office, at customs or during an eleven-hour flight home? Karin is interested in how playfulness can enter these situations.
It was a festive opening with a drink and a bite. With the delicious Lebanese saj bakery of the artist Mounira Al Solh and her assistent Koen Kutters.
This event was a re-enactment of the bakery initiated Mounira Al Solh in 2017 in Kassel during documenta 14.
