Love this opening. It took a little time to figure out the visual device to get Dee outside the fence but it was a real team effort and our brilliant editor Varinya Eammano gave us a Buffy-esque transition to get us there.
721 days trapped on a property and all she wants is chips and gravy. Directing this sequence it was all about leaning into Dee’s elation and showing off the town we fell in love while shooting in Oberon. @jazihall carries every single frame.
Then we’re off to the oval for our first physical fight, with the brilliant stunt coordinator @ben.toystunts. I wanted it to feel like two siblings fighting, heightened physically but anchored in vulnerability. Darcy trying to contain something that refuses to be contained. Dee finding her moment and taking it without hesitation. Survival of the fittest.

@appobjoy and the writing team gave us another absolute cracker!
I loved getting to spend some precious time with Dee. Directing this one was about pace and point of view. We move backwards in time to follow Dee’s first taste of freedom, and then switch back to Darcy racing to find her before his carefully held secret unravels. Two timelines hurtling into one another.
What I love about @jazi_hall performance in this episode is how completely she captures Dee’s spirit. All that supernatural energy and all she really wants is chips and gravy. That joy sets up everything, because it makes Darcy’s anxiety feel so much more desperate. He’s chasing something that just wants to be free.
And then Nora’s warmth finally cracks him open. He looks in the mirror. His reflection is gone.
Grateful to the whole Homebodies team for making something this special.

A scene I keep coming back to in EP3 is the Torwoo Champions wall.
So tender and beautiful, gorgeous choices from @roxiemohebbi and @lukewiltshre. I think part of the job as a director is knowing when to get out the way and let the actors do their work. I remember watching the monitor with a big goofy smile on my face, being so moved but also silently screaming ‘KISS HER, KISS HER’.

This episode is wall-to-wall. Big thanks to @charlottemars for writing this banger.
This episode earns its warmth the hard way. The challenge with directing this one was holding three different emotional states in just ten minutes. The morning after, ash on the ground and a relationship cracking. A doctor’s office where the wrong choice gets made for, seemingly, the right reasons. And then the pub, where two people finally find each other and say what they’ve been afraid to say out loud.
I wanted the pub wide to do two things at once. Place them in public, because Nora choosing to do this out in the open matters, and plant the window behind them, because what’s outside that window matters too.
When we moved into coverage I wanted the audience to feel like they were part of the conversation. Maximum impact for the reconciliation. And then Darcy looks up.
Really beautiful performance’s from the whole gang and what a joy to spend some more time with George aka @roxiemohebbi.

Grateful to the whole Homebodies team for making something this special.

Homebodies - Episode 1
This is the scene I keep coming back to.
Two people in a bathroom, trying their best. Darcy trying to parent his parent. Nora being gentle, reaching for the warmth of an old memory, and then saying exactly the wrong thing without meaning to.
Directing this, I wanted the audience to sit with the discomfort of these two trying to make their way back to each other. I always want the actors to play the truth in every scene, Claudia and Luke did just that. The blocking meant they could hide from each other both emotionally and physically and only the audience gets to see the whole scene play out, until face-to-face, the fractures widen.

Homebodies - Episode 1 👻
Some homecomings are harder than others.
Darcy comes home because his mum needs him. That’s the story they’re both telling. What’s underneath it, neither of them is ready to say out loud yet.
The challenge I had directing this episode was making the audience and Darcy feel unsettled before they had any reason to be. Every time Darcy moves through a new space the camera moves with him, wider than it needs to be, searching, like someone is watching. When he and Nora finally find each other, we pulled back into something more conventional. Familiar coverage for familiar people, trying to find their way back to each other. Dee needed to feel present in this episode before she appears.

We took Homebodies to Lille for @seriesmania and I still can’t quite believe it.
Watching a show I directed screen in the Short Forms Competition, in a cinema full of industry people from around the world, is one of those moments I’ll be chasing for the rest of my career. It felt earned. It felt real. And it felt like the beginning of something.
None of it happens without the people. @appobjoy, who created this world and trusted me to help bring it to life. @polyestergirl, who held everything together. @karvanclaudia, who is exactly as brilliant as you’d hope. @lukewiltshre and @jazi_hall who brought so much heart to every single scene. And @sarajwest, who showed up for all of it, including the bits that weren’t glamorous.
Lille, thank you. What a place to land. 👻
A big thank you to @wearevicscreen for helping me get all the way over there.

HOMEBODIES, special community screening on Tuesday, 31 March 6.30PM. Book now: https://queerscreen.org.au/sessions/homebodies/
"Set in the fictional town of Torwoo and filmed in Oberon and Portland in regional New South Wales, Homebodies blends humour, heart and a playful ghost story to explore identity, family and the messy work of reconciliation. At its core, it's a deeply human story about a mother and son learning how to see each other again." – SBS

Very proud to share that Homebodies is coming to @sbsondemand on March 28.
I had the privilege of setting up this series and directing five of the six episodes. It’s honestly one of the most meaningful jobs I’ve ever had. A deeply personal, sharp and beautiful story from the brilliant @appobjoy, shepherded with care, clarity and a whole lotta love by @polyestergirl and @liamheyen. And brought to life by the most generous and fearless cast and crew. Every frame has their fingerprints on it. I’ll miss being captain of this very special ship. But I can’t wait for you to see what we made.
