My mom, @cheryljohnson966 , always called me a dreamer.

I was always crafting, building, imagining. In the backyard with my “PA,” turning everyday life into something bigger, something magical. Taking real stories and reshaping them into worlds that didn’t exist.

And then I read the book The Alchemist.( in my twenties)
That book changed everything. It taught me that dreaming wasn’t escape. It was creation. It was power. It was alchemy.

Dreams became the place where I felt most alive.

Because the reality of the 70s and 80s was something else entirely.

Walking through gang-infested neighborhoods.
Group areas ACT Ghettos. Townships.
Holding my baby brother’s hand, making sure we got home safe.
Running from the army and police.
Who spread fear with Tear gas. Rubber bullets.

That was real.

And maybe that’s why I dreamed so hard.
Because imagination wasn’t just creativity. It was survival.

Reality pushed me to build something different.
To design. To create. To transform.

That’s how I became who I am today.

So to every kid growing up in places that were never built to uplift them
Places shaped by a past that tried to limit you
Places forgotten by those in power

Don’t give up.

Dream bigger than your surroundings.
Create beyond your circumstances.
Turn what you feel into what you build.

Become an alchemist.

Today we're spotlighting PDC Member and Supporter Warren Gray (Catch Me A Killer, London Calling), an Emmy-winning South African production designer based in Cape Town with an expansive career spanning film, narrative TV and commercials for clients across the U.S., U.K., Europe and Africa.

@warrengrays describes his design philosophy as rooted in detailed world-building and technological innovation. He was an early adopter of SketchUp, once mapping an entire island on location in Mozambique—a process that brought architectural plans to life for Icon Pictures in New York.

Today, he continues to integrate advanced tools like LiDAR and Blender into his design workflow. Beyond his personal accomplishments, Gray is committed to sharing knowledge and inspiring his teams. His collaborative leadership style-and the authenticity he brings to his work-has been a powerful driver of excellence and innovation on set.
