I’m going to post the Director’s Cut of the Bacardi film I recently directed in the coming week, but before that, I thought I’d share the adidas Originals film I directed (and creatively directed) two years ago.

Here’s a small step forward to directing more films, with the hope of making a feature film in the coming decade (learning to write; baby steps!). So yeah, I am now represented by @homegrownin Studios :)

Although this project was back in 2022, there are a few people I want to specifically thank for helping me bring this film to life.

@kaushal_dp , the amazing DOP, who was patient with me while I had my training wheels on—and who I’m looking forward to working with again (saying it aloud, Kaush!). @manjulamanjulamanjula my powerhouse producer, who had my back through all the nerves of a novice. @sharpavid_cut on the edit, someone I’ve always wanted to work with since Puma RTS. @soraabb_kumana my line producer managing it all despite having COVID. @bassdroppingalien on music mastered by wonder boy and now friend @kingkalmi. The very kind @jyotitulsyan13 @shravan.ravikantpatil and her wonderful team on production design. @adhishreep and team on HMU; @ikp.insta for all the support. My first AD @gautambhavna on running the (crazy) set and teaching me how shot breakdowns are done.

And of course, Team HG - who make it all possible
@nidhhe our art director, who also moonlit as my DA and visuals lead; @midnight.hobo for the multiple rounds of voiceovers and scripts @swaa.t brand partner and OG film partner @yashwiarora on styling. @whos.iara my perpetual, in-house model.

@ojasbagal my (former) client at adidas, who took a leap of faith with me. Lastly, Shakun Batra, from whom I’ve learned about filmmaking; and my brother @p0tra , ma, sister and friends, who are my greatest cheerleaders. And of course @ranveersingh for being gracious through the rained down sets and a thorough professional.

Here’s to more films, more stories, and more steps forward. And next up the Bacardi film.

End of September, I had the opportunity to direct (and creatively drive ) the Bacardi - Halloween film.

Homegrown and halloween in India has been a long standing love affair from 2016, and Bacardi has been our partner in crime.I was itching to direct for sometime now and there couldn’t be a greater canvas with a whole lot of freedom.

While the credits are towards the end of the film, I couldn’t have realised the project without few people. @varunmohta84 - my confidant, exemplary producer and human energiser bunny on speed. @satchith_paulose , the cinematic maestro as the DOP - to have those creative conversations that sparked new ideas and mutual trust - I was so excited to learn from him. @sharpavid_cut who so kindly rescheduled his birthday travel to accommodate the project - for me it had to be him. @dreamhourmusic and @kingkalmi on music - kalmi was on his flight to LA shared the stems and Dreamhour, a wonderful disco producer from Kolkata worked through the night (and days) to realise the direction for the music. My best friend @jezreelnathan who was coerced on the vocals - the world needs to hear more of her. For a 1 day shoot, @okeef ensured that we ran it right despite no storyboard and the curveballs. @_imfqu our post producer who makes it less challenging with that kind smile.

The cast of @gayu_inkb , @i.am.rosh @endo_mrinal , @itstherealshai @mehtafreddy and Chirag - thank you for your patience and realising the personas ❤️ Most of all, @manavigaur96@ashish_2208 , and the entire Bacardi team—thank you for the trust and freedom. It’s rare, and I don’t take it for granted.

Lastly, to my brother @p0tra , my sister @radhikapaprikaa , friends who always have my back and remind me that I can and I will—I couldn’t be prouder of myself. I see my growth from my last project to this one.

Here’s to directing even more in 2025! P.S. I’m repped by Homegrown Studios—just leaving it out there.

Hiring: Woman Director’s Assistant (DA) for Homegrown Studio & myself

I’m looking to connect with a Woman Director’s Assistant (DA) for an upcoming brand campaign project on 11th June.

Over the last few years, I’ve had the opportunity to direct projects for brands including adidas Originals, Bacardi, Casio, and Crocs under @homegrownin studios and for this project, I would ideally love to collaborate with a woman DA. I’m intentionally looking to work with a woman DA with the hope to create more representation for women in technical and production-led roles in this industry is by actively creating those opportunities and opening up access on set.

Looking for someone who:
- Has prior experience assisting on commercial / brand film sets
- Has worked on contemporary culture-led or youth-focused projects
- Thinks on their feet, stays calm under pressure, and is highly organised
- Can manage and communicate the director’s vision efficiently across HODs and departments
- has experience working on larger- scale productions
- Understands the pace and adaptability required on fast-moving creative set

Mumbai-based and to join immediately. If you know someone suitable, please write to careers@homegrown.in or DM with portfolios and previous work experience.

Please ensure your application clearly mentions:
- Previous DA experience
- Directors worked with
- Key projects / campaigns worked on

THERE’S A PROTEIN PROPAGANDA.
WHERE IS THE FIBRE?

In our obsession with protein have we forgotten the balance..that’s fibre (and yes complex carbs). Yes, it’s a very essential nutrient and good for your muscles and metabolic health as we age. But we have forgotten what we grew up learning that our vegetables and fruits are good for you.

Hell, we have replaced our apple a day with a protein popcorn for the gram. The obsession has led to exclusion of viral nutrients for our bodies to function in our diet with all the hyper marketing and influencing.

We are all just drinking the (protein) cool-aid.

What is life’s greatest privilege?

I was once asked where my confidence came from, almost as a surprise (not surprising from a man). Because confidence in a woman has to be palatable. And I kept questioning myself and would sometimes shrink parts of me.

Because the truth is that confidence is easy to mistake when others haven’t experienced what it feels like to be deeply believed in.

I have the greatest privilege in the world - to be deeply loved and supported by my ma.

She has this unwavering belief in me and there is something life-altering about being loved like that. There’s nothing Varshu can’t do if she puts her mind to it - it’s true, but that’s because I have ma. My ma, where do I start - perhaps this is the first of them to tell her incredible story.

But today is about knowing that every time I failed and made a mistake (that was my own) or I take that proverbial risk or went against the grain and stood in defiance against the world or my father- she stood/stands by me. I have always believed that I am resilient - but I know that it doesn’t exist in a vacuum.

It comes from my ma. Shefale is a woman who keeps going against all odds in her spirited audacity. And that’s the beauty of this unwavering belief that eventually, it become you.

That’s life’s greatest privilege, to move through life knowing that no matter what happens, there is at least one person in this world who believes there is nothing you cannot become or should be.

Love you ma - you are my greatest love story @patrashefale

When not in black. It wears red. ♏️

The last 6 months and 2 pictures from 20 years ago from college for good measure.

What’s interesting to see my body change through a course of a month through my menstrual cycle. It often throws me off - even to this day; but finally trying to reconcile with it.

People always talk — they do. Every move, every outfit, every post just ends up getting dissected. But what really defines you, is doing what you love and simply being yourself.

So, if people are going to talk...let them.
