House music was born in Chicago, and @djloribranch was there from the beginning. On “House Music Chicago Testimony,” produced by @vitigrrl, she sits down with the pioneering Chicagoans who built the genre. Lori & Vitigrrl (two-thirds of @goodgirlsdjs) sat down with @nudiaonair to share some of their favorite stories from recording and discuss the podcast. Full convo on #youtube and in our bio!

“A Job in the Business”

Vick Lavender (@vick_lavender) has never taken the easy road. Born in Louisiana, and raised on Chicago’s west side, he came up on dub tapes, Italo, and New Wave records before deep house had a name. DJ, producer, founder of Sophisticado Recordings, co-owner of @bridgeportrecords312, every step has been deliberate and every move a natural progression. He has never been in a rush. He has never been satisfied either.

Deep house is not easily understood. Neither is an artist who has spent thirty years crafting music that draws from jazz fusion, world music and R&B, music that calls to ancestral spirit and permeates the soul. A prolific producer with releases on West End Records, Sacred Rhythm Music, Local Talk, Ocha and his own Sophisticado Recordings, championed by the likes of Glenn Underground, Anthony Nicholson, Boo Williams and Ron Trent, while remaining largely unbothered by the spotlight. Today he’s still putting out some of the most beautiful, unhurried music in the game. All of it on vinyl.

Recorded inside Bridgeport Records, in this episode, Vick talks about the city, people and records that shaped him, the culture of Chicago’s segregated club scene, what it means to always have a job inside the business and where he’s going next.

Intergenerational Lesbian Visibility: The power of seeing what is possible.🪞

There is something very unique about the energy and beauty of Old Gold: You look around the room and see people dancing together in their 30s to their 60s and beyond, a rare intergenerational experience that we really need right now to soften and remind us that we have been here and have so much more to look forward to.

On this Day of Lesbian Visibility, we lift up the queer women, dykes, sapphics and all the people across generations and gender (trans and non-binary family, we see you!) that take a chance on our parties. Old Gold intentionally makes space for queer women and non-binary babes on the decks and dance floor. By purchasing a ticket you’re investing in lesbian culture, commerce and community and we thank you for collaborating with us to make it such a welcoming and vibrant space.

May 3 is our last party of our spring season at Three Top Lounge and tickets are very close to selling out again so we recommend advance purchase; the word is out about our little day soiree! We’ll have 30 available at the door too; get there early.

The whole @goodgirlsdjs gang will be on the decks for our finale! We can’t wait to twirl to the R&B, house, disco and more against the backdrop of the best city view in town.

Summer is coming and we will see you at @guildrow Second Sundays June-Sept! So much togetherness to look forward to. 🌷

“Everybody Knows Dajae. Nobody Knows Karen.”

Episode 5 of House Music Chicago Testimony is out now. @djloribranch sits down with Karen Gordon — known to house music lovers everywhere as Dajae — in a rare, intimate conversation recorded at Bridgeport Records. You know the voice. The name behind it has largely stayed out of the spotlight. And honestly? Karen is fine with that, “I love the mystery of me.”

Karen grew up in Englewood, the daughter of a doo-wop singer who performed on the Ed Sullivan Show. Music was always in the house, but her path to it was long…years of singing background, a gold album on a Will Smith record, auditions that turned her away. By the time she was approaching thirty, she was almost done with it entirely.

Then a last-minute introduction to producer Cajmere (@officialgreenvelvet) in 1992 changed everything. “Brighter Days” reached number two on the Billboard dance charts and has never stopped being played. More than thirty years later, Dajae’s voice remains one of the most recognized in house music. Karen opens up about her family’s musical lineage, what it means to be a woman vocalist in a scene that often left its female voices uncredited, her spirituality, and her life today on the South Side caring for her mother.

Did we mention she sings? More than once! Dajae rarely gives interviews and we’re so grateful she gave us this one. Swipe to hear it in her own words. Listen to the full episode wherever you get your podcasts!

“Everybody Has Somewhere to Go.”

Episode 4 of House Music Chicago Testimony is out now. @djloribranch sits down with the legendary Toni Shelton (also known as @disco.toni) Chicago’s first woman to be a solo House Music party promoter. She’s one of the most unsung & enduring figures in the history of Chicago house music.

Since 1979, Toni has been doing one thing better than almost anyone: bringing people together. From passing out pluggers (aka flyers) with her own photo on them at high schools across the city at 16, to hosting all-white parties that have drawn crowds for over two decades, she has spent her entire life creating a place where everybody belongs.

She is a promoter, a photographer, a model, an entrepreneur, a mother of four, and the kind of woman who has been mothering her community long before she ever had children of her own.

Her story of longevity, legacy, and love for this culture is one of the most warm, funny, and alive conversations we’ve had yet.

Swipe to hear it in her own words and to see some truly legendary photos. Listen to the full episode wherever you get your podcasts!
