We sat in his Ute, staring out at the spot Lach had spotted from the trees on the first day of the swell. It was way out there—so far it felt like the horizon was hiding it—but you could still see the barrels breathing, detonating in the distance. No one had paddled out yet, but whispers said it had been surfed before.
Lachie flips a dusty 20 cent coin. Tails. No go 🚫. “Sweet, let’s bail,” I said, a little relieved. The last thing I wanted was to film him doing something he’d instantly regret.
“Nah, f**k the coin,” Lach laughed, already wriggling into his wetsuit.
A 1.5 km solo paddle. One hour till sunset. I tried to track him with the drone, but the signal kept dropping out, forcing me back to shore. The first wave I saw him take, he vanished—him and the board—gone for twenty minutes. My stomach knotted. Part awe, part dread.
If you know @romboutslachie, you know he’s one of the most dialled-in, nature-synced, eternally playful, shamanically-coned beings to walk these plains. That day was no different. Out there on the edge of the known, he reminded me—again—that wild places aren’t just where you find adventure. They’re where you find yourself. Thanks for lessons brother 🙏🏽

Here is some video of Joe Bonamassa playing the Rory Gallagher song, Bullfrog Blues. This was from our production in Ireland last year, and on this particular song, Gerry McAvoy, Rory‘s regular bass player, stood in! I produced this recording, as well as mixed it, (and did all the preproduction with Joe before we brought the songs to the band). Amazing band – Aongus Ralston, Jeremy Stacey, Lachy Doley, Conor Brady and of course Joe. Paul van Kan film the video and he and Joe’s manager, Roy Weisman, oversaw the editing. I guess the full show is gonna be quite soon. @aongus_ralston @mcavoy.gerry @joebonamassa @lachydoley @jezzastace@rayfinkelstein @vankangram @reelfolkstudio Enjoy! We all love Rory! @donalg88 @rorygallagherofficial
