Let's talk about our four projects to win awards from the American Concrete Institute Georgia Chapter, starting with the Truist Headquarters at the battery!
Located adjacent to Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves baseball team, this corporate headquarters is the latest home for Truist Securities national headquarters. The Class A office building with an 11-story office tower with attached 6-level parking deck that supports a state-of-the-art 42,000 sf trading floor.
The office structure is designed as a cast-in-place concrete frame and features a curvilinear front facade for the first 6 stories. The 9th floor boasts a large exterior terrace overlooking the baseball stadium. Surrounding the top of the tower, a custom steel framed canopy cantilevers horizontally up to 16 feet and connects to base plates attached at the top of the structure.
The parking deck is precast concrete construction bearing on drilled pier and spread footing foundations. The uppermost level supports the state-of-the-art trading floor for the investment bank company. The roof structure is designed with long-span steel truss girders supporting steel joists and roof decking. This roof framing was selected to create a columnless floor plate.

Our next entry in the 30 for 30 program is Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton Hospital in Braselton, GA. The 30 for 30 program celebrates our 30 years in business by featuring 30 significant past projects in weekly posts.
NGMC Braselton Hospital was built to meet the current and future healthcare needs of the growing Northeast Georgia region.
This project consists of a new 3-story, 218,000-square-foot hospital tower and also a 5-story, 125,000-square-foot medical office building. Each component was designed to allow for both horizontal and vertical expansion.
In addition to designing for future floors, there were many other structural challenges. For example, vibration-sensitive medical equipment on elevated floors required careful analysis of the structure to ensure adequate performance. Additionally, cantilevered canopies and varying roof forms required careful coordination with the architectural team.
Since the original building was constructed, Uzun + Case has implemented several projects at the campus which take advantage of the reserve capacity provided by the original structural design.

This past Friday, Vito Palmieri of
@hiltinorthamerica hosted about 30 of our young engineers and interns for lunch and an afternoon of hands-on demonstration. Our engineers got an opportunity to learn to install epoxy anchors and practice their vertical anchor installation skills. They were even able to take a shot at installing powder actuated metal deck fasteners! Thanks to Vito and his team!

Our next entry in the 30 for 30 program is Willson Hospice House in Albany, GA. The 30 for 30 program celebrates our 30 years in business by featuring 30 significant past projects in weekly posts.
Willson Hospice House is a single-story, 39,000 square foot building designed to seamlessly fit into the surrounding landscape. The project achieved LEED Silver Recognition and was the first healthcare facility to achieve Audubon Certification.
The structural system primarily consists of load bearing wood elements with steel framing strategically used at large open spaces. Where possible, wood elements are exposed and were carefully selected to be cost effective and blend into the natural landscape. Extensive use of locally harvested wood provides an inviting environment.
Throughout the design, thought was given to balance the aesthetics with the economics. Lower cost conventional wood trusses were used to frame the roof at enclosed attic spaces while steel clad in wood was used where the structure was exposed in large volume public spaces. Glulam beams, wood cladding, and sizable windows were integrated into the design to extend the feel of the exterior landscape to the interior of the building.
Careful coordination of the roof design allowed for mechanical units to be hidden within the wood roof trusses thereby keeping the roof free of mechanical units and maintaining the natural look and feel of the project.

Earlier this week our young engineers attended an in-house Teaching Hour. Led by our Principal, James A. Jones, they explored analytical design methodologies for strength and serviceability.

Our next entry in the 30 for 30 program is the Reinsurance Group of America's Global Headquarters project, designed in 2012. The 30 for 30 program celebrates our 30 years in business by featuring 30 significant past projects in weekly posts.
The Reinsurance Group of America’s Global Headquarters is a 405,000 square foot, LEED Silver certified complex consisting of two five-story office buildings which are connected by a common atrium structure. The project also includes a 580,000 square foot, two-story parking deck with an outdoor amenity space on top.
The office buildings cantilever more than 40 feet past the edge of the base podium structure. A 4-story tall steel truss system located at the perimeter of each office building was used to support their long cantilever extension.
Despite the very tight design schedule and many structural design and construction challenges, this development was completed ahead of schedule and within budget. Uzun + Case LLC also assisted with construction engineering on the project, including the shoring towers at the cantilevers. This included doing a staged analysis, which accounted for the building’s sequence of construction.

During the recent teaching hour session, Nate Blong discussed the various types of shop drawing submittals with our engineers and interns, highlighting on the focal points of review, efficiency tips, and overall importance of the shop drawing and submittal process.

Our next entry in the 30 for 30 program is the Georgia Tech Hinman Project designed in 2010.
Built in 1939, the Hinman Building was the first research building at Georgia Tech.
Originally dedicated to research on heavy mechanical equipment, the building had a 50 ft. tall high-bay space and an associated bridge crane. Obsolete for its original use, in 2010 it was decided to convert the building into architecture studio space.
As the structural engineer for the project, @uzuncase assisted with the historic restoration and designed the building additions. First among the additions was a new floor structure suspended from the existing bridge crane! This was a challenge given the need to study the crane capacity, execute the design of the unique structure, and control its vibration characteristics.
The structure provides a lesson in structural principles. Its hangers demonstrate tension, it tapering beams demonstrate bending, and its diagonal stair demonstrates lateral bracing.
We are proud to have been part of the team which created this artful renovation of the building and new studio space for architecture students at Georgia Tech.
