This Memorial Day weekend, we remember all those lost while serving aboard USS CONSTITUTION.

The video features Gordon Grant’s 1927 painting of the Ship, commissioned by the Secretary of the Navy to inspire a national effort to restore “Old Ironsides.” Reproduced as a lithograph, it was purchased by Americans honoring the legacy of CONSTITUTION and the generations who served aboard.

Not every sacrifice came in battle.

Across USS CONSTITUTION’s long history, more than 275 officers and crew died while serving aboard the ship. Some were lost to illness, some to accident, and some to the hazards of working high in the rigging or sailing far from shore.

Two young sailors. One remarkable chapter in USS CONSTITUTION’s story.

This carte-de-visite photograph shows John P. Jones, left, and John Thomas Jefferson, right, two teenage boys who served aboard USS Constitution in the 1860s, when the ship was used as a school ship for midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy. 🇺🇸 ⚓

Both are wearing dress blues that mark their rank as 1st Class Boys in the U.S. Navy, a reminder that the story of “Old Ironsides” is also the story of the young people who trained, served, and came of age aboard the ship.

“The famed Constitution.” This video features a narrative excerpt from "Hull’s Victory: or Huzza for the Constitution," a song in the Museum’s collection celebrating USS CONSTITUTION’s victory over HMS GUERRIERE during the War of 1812.

It was a pivotal moment that helped secure the ship’s legendary reputation as “Old Ironsides” and announced the young United States’ arrival on the world stage.

More than 200 years later, USS CONSTITUTION still inspires. 🇺🇸
