Worker cooperatives and democratic workplaces are growing steadily and meaningfully. Since 2020, the sector has grown 34%, while traditional small businesses only grew 13% since 2019.

Today, there are an estimated 1,300 worker co-ops and democratic workplaces employing 16,000 workers across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. In this year’s census, we identified 820 firms employing 13,520 workers, more than double the workforce counted just over a decade ago.

Let’s keep moving toward shared ownership, democratic governance, and workplaces built on values.

Why is Papeton Printing Co-op participating in the boycott?
One of the many reasons is that we are frustrated that REI is a misrepresentation of the international cooperative model.
REI labels itself a consumer co-op; however, co-op members have virtually no voice in the direction of the co-op. Members and workers are, by REI bylaws ineligible to serve on the board:

Per REI's bylaws Section 5: To serve on REI’s board, individuals must possess high personal and professional ethics, have demonstrated superior business acumen as an executive leader in a large, complex organization and be an active participant in one or more of the outdoor activities REI supports and promotes. Equally important, directors must appreciate and promote the value of the co-op business model and support REI’s commitment to sharing profits with members, employees and the communities in which REI does business.

This is undemocratic and erodes the entire foundation of co-op principles. REI stopped releasing the results of board votes in 2019, board minutes in 2022, and reports of executive compensation in 2025. No democracy, no transparency, no accountability, thus REI is not a co-op.

If REI wants to improve their financial health they need to listen to their co-op members, which is what allows a consumer co-op to function properly.
