As we wrap up National Safe Boating Week, the message remains the same: life jackets save lives, but only if you wear them. 🚤

Find one that fits and wear it every time you’re on the water. We do! It’s the single most effective way to help ensure everyone comes home safely. ⚓️

🛟 Safe Boating Week 🧯

As you get ready for the summer on the water, make sure your boat is equipped with the proper safety gear before heading out. A little preparation can help keep everyone safe and make your trip more enjoyable.

Before leaving the dock, be sure you have:
- Life jackets
- Fire extinguisher
- Throwable flotation device
- Visual stress signals (flares)
- Sound producing device (whistle or horn)
- VHF radio or another reliable way to communicate

It’s also important to know how to properly use all of your safety equipment before an emergency happens.

Stay safe and enjoy your time on the water this summer!

🔴 Oh buoy! 🟢

Just as street and traffic lights help us navigate on land, navigation aids such as buoys, beacons and lights, help mariners safely navigate on the water 🚦

Aids to Navigation Team (ANT) Oak Island maintains and services over 500 short-range aids along the Intracoastal Waterway from the southernmost border of North Carolina to the southern portion of Bogue Sound, including the Cape Fear River.

👀 Take a look at the video below to see them test a “can” buoy after they completed maintenance on it. It’s imperative to ensure the aid functions correctly prior to placing it back in its designated location in the water.

Ever wonder who makes sure those massive foreign ships in our harbors are actually up to code? Marine Science Technicians, Port State Control Officers, and specialized teams within the U.S. Coast Guard conduct unannounced inspections called “Port State Control Exams”. 🚢

🔍 What happens during a PSC exam?
Our teams board foreign-flagged vessels to ensure they are following all international laws and U.S. regulations. The in-depth safety inspection includes an audit of:
• Documentation and Certifications
• Navigation and Bridge Equipment
• Life-Saving Gear
• Fire Protection and Structural Integrity
• Environmental Protection
• Emergency Drills

🚩 What if a ship fails the test?
If a vessel isn't up to par, we hit the "pause" button. We impose controls and won't let them proceed until everything is fixed and they’re back in full compliance. ✅

Did you know that in addition to conducting law enforcement on the water, the U.S. Coast Guard ALSO conducts law enforcement on land?

As part of our 11 statutory missions, the Coast Guard conducts Multi-Agency Strike Force Operations (MASFOs) to ensure the safety and security of our major ports.

These events allow us to partner with various agencies to inspect cargo, vehicles and personnel for weapons, drugs, contraband, and potential hazmat violations.

Coast Guard Sector North Carolina teamed up with five local agencies and six K-9 units to conduct a MASFO at the North Carolina State Ports Authority in Wilmington, NC.
