The mission is clear: ensure that those in distress return home safely.

National Search and Rescue Week recognizes the Coast Guard men and women, along with responders in the search and rescue community, who answer the call when lives are on the line. Last year, the Coast Guard saved over 5,200 lives and preserved over $1 billion in property.

From vigilant watchstanders coordinating responses, to air crews and boat crews launching into challenging conditions, every rescue depends on teamwork, precision, and readiness.

To the entire SAR community: thank you for your courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to our most sacred trust.

As U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Vincent Danz (WPC 1162) prepares for its commissioning ceremony this morning, May 22, 2026, in New York City, crewmembers reflected on the responsibility and significance of honoring the cutter’s namesake.

“This crew doesn't take what we're doing lightly,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Dominic Fisher. “We all want to be here, and we all understand the gravity of what this means to not only the family, but the police department and the fire department as well. For us, coming up here for this ceremony, we're here for him. You know, we're here to honor his legacy, and we'll keep doing that. And whenever we transfer, we'll make sure that even though the boat's going to be in a fifteen-hour time difference, we'll still make sure the next crew that comes on honors his legacy as well.”

Petty Officer 2nd Class Vincent Danz was a Coast Guard reservist and New York City police officer assigned to the NYPD Emergency Services Unit. Danz made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center.

The crew of U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Vincent Danz (WPC 1162) arrived in New York City on May 20, 2026, ahead of the cutter’s commissioning ceremony. Vincent Danz is the 62nd Fast Response Cutter and the fourth FRC scheduled to be homeported in Guam. The cutter is named in honor of New York City police officer and Coast Guard reservist Petty Officer 2nd Class Vincent Danz, who made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center.

Several members of the crew have ties to New York, the NYPD, and 9/11, making the commissioning personal for them.

“I never expected to be assigned to a cutter named after an NYPD hero from 9/11,” said Ensign Jonathan Gonzalez, a member of the Vincent Danz crew. “Growing up in New York, my father had connections with people who served alongside Vincent Danz, and I’m even in touch with some of them right now who are helping us with the ceremony. We knew a lot of people who died on 9/11, and many of the families, so it’s personal to me. This cutter was also announced on my birthday, so there are a lot of strange coincidences for me.

“I’m really glad I got the opportunity to do this instead of being stationed somewhere else. Seeing the heritage of Vincent Danz, learning about him specifically, and coming back to New York to be part of this event has been an amazing experience. I’m very happy that I’m able to help memorialize this 9/11 hero.”

The Coast Guard is scheduled to hold a commissioning ceremony for Coast Guard Cutter Vincent Danz, May 22, 2026. The ceremony will also be streamed live on the @uscgnortheast Facebook page.

#Sail250 brings the tall ships. Here's who keeps the harbor open underneath them. This summer, five ports — New Orleans, Norfolk, Baltimore, New York, and Boston — welcome the world's tall ships for Sail250, marking 250 years of American independence. Those same harbors move hundreds of billions in cargo every year.
While the fleet draws the crowds, the commercial traffic never stops — and neither do we. The #USCG keeps these ports safe, open, and running every day: securing the waterways, maintaining aids to navigation, and boarding foreign-flagged ships for inspections to ensure every vessel in our harbors meets international and U.S. safety standards.

Behind every one of these missions are the marine inspectors, boat crews, and watchstanders who do this work in all conditions, around the clock — long before the first tall ship arrives and long after the last one leaves.

The tall ships get the spotlight. This is the work and the people who make it possible. 🫡

This National Safe Boating Week, we want to remind you to NEVER boat under the influence ❌🍹

Alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating incidents, listed in 20% of fatalities.

Boat smart. Boat safe. Boat sober.

The call to serve is a call to action.

In the U.S. Coast Guard, that action is constant and varied. It’s saving lives in some of the world’s most perilous environments. It’s swiftly executing interdictions on the high seas, and meticulously facilitating commerce in our ports and waterways. It’s deploying advanced technology to defend our maritime approaches against any threat.

Every task, no matter how different, is a direct contribution to our life-saving work in service of the American people. The desire to “try everything” finds its purpose here, where endless possibilities unite under a single, unwavering commitment to the nation.

In 12 days, America's Tall Ship kicks off Sail250 in New Orleans — the maritime celebration of America's 250th birthday.

Five cities. One Coast Guard. From the Gulf to New England, this summer we mark 250 years of American independence the same way we always have — by being on the water.

While #CGCEagle leads the celebration, crews across the Atlantic Area have been working through it all — running SAR cases, standing watch, inspecting vessels, tending the buoys that keep commerce moving. The mission never pauses.

#Sail250 starts now.
New Orleans (May 28 – June 1)
Norfolk (June 19 – 23)
Baltimore (June 24 – 30)
New York (July 3 – 8)
Boston (July 11 – 16)

Today is the start of #NationalSafeBoatingWeek 🛟 🛥️

Accidents on the water can happen in an instant, leaving little time to grab a stowed life jacket.

Whether you’re on a fishing trip or enjoying a day on the water with family, wear it, check your safety gear, and always be prepared for the unexpected.

Crew members at Air Station Houston conducted 7, 14, and 30-day maintenance on an MH-65 Dolphin, inspecting systems, checking for corrosion, and ensuring the aircraft is mission ready.

Every inspection and detail plays a role in keeping crews in the air and ready to respond when it matters most.

We’re wearing our life jackets to work today because wearing your life jacket works! 🦺🚣
.
.
.
Drowning was the reported cause of 83% of boating fatalities, 88% of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. The best life jacket is one YOU will wear when you are on the water. When accidents occur, there is usually little time to grab stowed vests. Wearing one at all times reduces the risk of drowning.
Wear your life jacket to work day kicks off National Safe Boating Week which begins this weekend. Stay tuned for more boating safety tips so you can stay safe on the water this season.
