UNDERDOGS OF İSTANBUL

Found materials and textile waste collected from İMÇ

This work is produced through the reinterpretation of textile waste sourced from various shops operating within the Istanbul Manifaturacılar Çarşısı (İMÇ), spanning different disciplines. Underdogs of İstanbul reconfigures textile remnants into three-dimensional forms, establishing a dialogue between the rigid, brutalist architecture of İMÇ and the fluid, ever-changing nature of textiles. In this context, waste material is treated not merely as residue, but as a transformable art object that carries the site’s memory of production.

Bu çalışma, İstanbul Manifaturacılar Çarşısı içinde faaliyet gösteren farklı disiplinlerdeki dükkanlardan çıkan kumaş atıklarının yeniden yorumlanmasıyla üretilmiştir. Underdogs of İstanbul, tekstil artıklarını üç boyutlu form aracılığıyla yeniden kurgulayarak İMÇ’nin sert, brutalist mimarisi ile tekstilin akışkan ve değişken karakteri arasında bir diyalog kurar. Atık malzeme bu bağlamda yalnızca bir artık değil, mekânın üretim hafızasını taşıyan dönüştürülebilir bir sanat nesnesi olarak ele alınır.

“Underdogs of Istanbul reconstructs textile waste through three abstract forms, establishing a dialogue between the harsh, brutalist architecture of IMÇ and the fluid and mutable nature of textiles. In this context, waste material is treated not merely as a residue, but as a transformable art object that carries the production memory of the space.”
