It’s been 1 year since the passing of my father and the anniversary cycled through this month. That now eternal imprint of time has brought up a lot of confusing thoughts and feelings as it does. Last year around his memorial a few people encouraged me to share more of him but I just wasn’t in a place internally in my person nor in my relationship with Instagram and the outside world to do so.

I think the pandemic really prepared me for the realities that life has no reservations about coming at you fast and completely changing in an instant. You must acknowledge, adjust, and evolve cuz the world doesn’t stop even though your world has come collapsing down.

Jim Flemons was an all American athlete born in September of 1940. He was one spot away from making it to the Olympics in track & field, a founding member of Alpha Phi Alpha, and a close affiliate with the Black Panther Party. My mom taught me how to dance but it was his presence on the dancefloor that gave me the courage to step out and express myself unapologetically- like when I was a kid and would see him drop down into a half split at the family function grey hair and all.

My mom taught me how to dance but it was his presence on the dancefloor that gave me the courage to step out and express myself unapologetically- like when I was a kid and would see him drop down into a half split at the family function grey hair and all.

My contribution to Halloween this year was a custom T-Boz ‘No Scrubs’ interpretation

Under the circumstances I was in it was much more challenging than I was expecting but upon reflection it makes me happy looking at pictures of it as a reminder of what I overcame in that moment and produced through it

LONG STORYTIME: Due to the type of person I am generally taking paths unknown, I follow my walk through life via full circle moments. I find them to be signs that I’m on the right path, to stay present & keep moving forward.

A few weeks back I was blessed with the opportunity to see @robynkonichiwa live at The Fonda. I got to see many dear friends I hadn’t seen in years as Iv been a bit of a recluse from the world.

As the night progressed forward I ended up at the shows after party & found myself chatting with @kindnessmusic & a group of people outside that happened to include Robyn. @tureynamiguel was casually chatting her up while adorned in some PHLEMUNS pieces which caught her attention directing the conversation to me & how they were from my brand.

I was on such a high that evening that I had no intention of forcing myself in front of her to share with her our backstory. I took the opportunity to mention to her that she bought some pieces from my first collection and how much that moment meant to me as a fresh new brand/designer. She responded “omg yes the top and skirt I still have the top!”- from that point on my insides had fully illuminated as I was already on such a high.

In 2015 @ameliankashirohamilton reached out to me to pull some pieces & make a few custom for Robyn & La Bagatelle Magique feat. Maluca’s video for ‘Love is Free’ that she was styling. Due to a change in shoot dates she had to pass the project on to another stylist who was FKA Twigs stylist at the time. Knowing that the video was happening & I had a connect I was determined to ensure that my pieces ended up on set, asking if I could still hand them off to the new stylist working on the video. That lead to the stylist reaching out to me on behalf of Robyn who was interested in buying 2 pieces from my first “collection”, @malucamala wearing one of my tops in the video, & the cherry on top my bestfriend @francfernandez making a cameo in the music video!

Just another blessing of a 🔄 moment ✨
Thank you for the invite @brownskinhazel 🤎

LONG STORYTIME: Due to the type of person I am generally taking paths unknown, I follow my walk through life via full circle moments. I find them to be signs that I’m on the right path, to stay present & keep moving forward.

@PHLEMUNS pieces are and will continue to be more and more rare. As I’m looking to close out this specific chapter in my life and design career in this way, an IG sale is upon us this coming Sunday 12/21 !

This is a purge of inventory that continues to reveal itself as well as some samples I never thought I’d let go of- at low prices cuz y’all know I’m FOR THE PEOPLE “the people’s designer” ✊🏽

I always love hearing that people pass these items on as gifts *so keep that in mind*
Get them coins ready and help assist me in transitioning my life as I go through some massive changes 🙂‍↕️

( If you’re local to LA picking up in person to avoid shipping cost will be an option )

Watching High Horse: The Black Cowboy on @peacock has had me reflecting on my deep love for Black history. Themes of the Black Cowboy have always been heavily present in my work with @PHLEMUNS.

Being from Los Angeles, there is a history of a lot of migration from the south that came to settle here (which is the case for both sides of my family). I was raised on street smart knowledge, power, and hospitality of the southern identity… as well as the idea of “we can take care of any problem here at home through our own minds and resources”.

(Sidebar: my mom always tells me a story about my first pair of cowboy boots I got when I was little and how I wore them tf out well beyond the time I could still fit them- they really made me feel something connected to something, I was obsessed… pretty sure that’s why parts of my feet are fucked up to this day lol but your mind really connects to the power of garments)

Black culture truly fuels my life force and it’s always nice to have prompts that take me back to a place of reflection seeing how it reveals itself through my work, and out into the world. I’m truly grateful @jordanpeele docu-series was made, as a reclamation of Black power and real history being retold- it’s more important now than ever. MAKE THEM MAD!

Also such a sweet surprise to see my fellow Tumblr University alum @brimalandro all up in there 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
