How to build with what is already there and for what is yet to come? An inconclusive take on architecture and time.

Time Matters questions the aesthetic and poetic potential that transformation processes can generate. Today, unstable climatic conditions, changing landscapes and new usage patterns must be anticipated right from the design stage. The apparent contradiction of an unstable context and our desire to create long-lasting buildings opens up possibilities for a new kind of process-based aesthetic.

The book brings together six contributions that shed light on the relationship of architecture to time with a view to past, present and future scenarios, from theoretical essays, mappings and realized interventions to more speculative projects. The texts are accompanied by a series of images with artistic and architectural examples.

Time Matters: lasting designs, uncertain lifespans and architectural future-proofing

In times of a plurality of geopolitical conflicts, increasing migrations, climatic pressures, and economic instabilities, it is hard to imagine long-lasting constructions. Looking back into the history of our settlements, very few buildings can be considered permanent, and the longevity of such structures has mostly resulted from their having remarkable cultural value, significant economic support, and notable labour investment. Most buildings are maintained, then redesigned, appropriated or demolished. However, what becomes very apparent right now is the accelerating and multiplying timelines of those processes. Increasing consumption rates, omnipresent demolition sites, and piles of waste make it obvious that we are no longer designing ‘forever buildings’, nor can we afford the tabula rasa approaches that disregard the trans-scalar impacts of our design actions.

The lecture follows building life cycles and material flows, jumping between timelines, geolocations, and scales to explore the ecological complexities of rebuilding and unbuilding practices. It looks into poly-temporal noticing, iterative processes, and dynamic architectural strategies that avoid unnecessary resource expenditures while adjusting existing matter to current climatic and sociocultural demands. "Nietypowym podejściem wykazali się projektanci readaptacji wielkopowierzchniowej hali wystawowej Chapex w Charleroi. Architekci z AjdvivgwA (pracownie AM architecten, De Vylder Vinck i AgwA) podważyli warunki konkursu architektonicznego, by zaproponować strategiczne interwencje, które pozwoliły stworzyć nowy park publiczny, nieprzewidziany w wytycznych, i jednocześnie ograniczyć zakres prac budowlanych. Znaczącą część istniejącej substancji pozostawili nietkniętą, dzięki czemu zmieścili się w skromnym budżecie projektu. Zakwestionowali tym samym przesadne wymagania powierzchniowe dla poszczególnych funkcji, podyktowane paradygmatem promującym ciągły wzrost. Zakres metamorfozy był skromny. Budynek zachował dotychczasową estetykę, usunięto zbędne wykończenia, nowych nie zaproponowano. We wnętrzu hali wyodrębniono mniejsze bryły dla funkcji wymagających podwyższonego standardu wykończenia – ten zabieg pozwolił ograniczyć zasoby w procesie budowy (między innymi zmniejszyć zapotrzebowanie na izolację termiczną) i użytkowania (zmniejszyć zapotrzebowanie energetyczne na ogrzewanie i chłodzenie budynku). Projektantom Chapex bliska jest koncepcja „wystarczalności” (nie należy jej mylić z przeciwieństwem „wydajności”): „opisuje ona wizję kultury materialnej, w której ludzkość – a zwłaszcza globalna Północ – musi sobie radzić w warunkach, gdy mając do dyspozycji mniej: mniej energii, mniej zasobów, mniej ziemi”, zamiast szastać zasobami, „bardziej odpowiedzialnie używa dostępnych środków”." pisze w Nowym wernakularyzmie Urszula Koźmińska w tekście Kwestie czasu. Akceptacja, unikanie, dostosowywanie i perspektywiczność w praktykach architektonicznych.
