Big questions about wildlife require more than one way of knowing. Brendan Carswell, a second year PhD student in @ucalgaryscience at @UCalgary and a 2025 Killam scholar, is proving just that.

His research explores the decline of moswa, or moose, by weaving Western scientific methods with Indigenous Knowledge from Opaskwayak Cree Nation. By supporting Western Science tools like GPS data and camera traps with community knowledge, Brendan and Opaskwayak are building a more complete understanding of how and why populations are changing.

The approach is intentional and rooted in respect. “If there is one thing I can hope to contribute, it is that respectfully and intentively working across knowledge systems can provide rigorous and enriched information,” he explains.

At UCalgary, that mindset is supported through labs like WWALK, where collaboration across disciplines and communities is central. For Carswell, the Killam scholarship is more than recognition. It is an opportunity to deepen research that connects people, place and purpose.

Dr. Erik Bakkeren runs a bacterial fight club out of his lab, with the goal of engineering bacteria to do the work of antibiotic drugs.

He admits it might sound a bit silly at first, but this study will help researchers learn what survival strategies and adaptations allow your gut microbiome to thrive, and how to combat harmful types of bacteria that pose a threat to your health.

His research lab, which started in 2025, has received a boost. Dr. Bakkeren has earned himself a position in the CIFAR Global Scholars Program, which gives early career researchers like him the chance to develop and lead high-risk high-reward interdisciplinary work.

It’s May 20th, and that means it’s World Bee Day!

World Bee Day raises awareness about the role that bees and other pollinators play in keeping people and the planet healthy.

Native pollinators are in decline, so a better understanding of how to support them is important. Many of our flowering plants and food are dependent on pollinators.

You can help support pollinators by growing flowering plants in your yard, on a balcony, or in community gardens.
