CROYDON ISN'T A BLANK CANVAS 🌱

It’s full of communities and culture which deserve support, protection and stability.

Turf was founded in 2013 by local artists.
Still led by locals, over 13 years we've tirelessly nurtured creativity in our borough through:
👉 Over 60 free projects & 700 free workshops, getting over 50,000 people of all ages involved in art.
👉 Over 600 paid opportunities for local & national artists.
👉 Studio space for 4 local organisations & over 60 studio artists.

Like so many organisations across the country, we've done all this from unstable, temporary spaces.

It's time to change that.

Who gets to take up space defines who gets opportunities, who feels valued, who gets to belong.

It's time to insist on a future for Croydon that prioritises spaces for, created by, led by, and truly belonging to local communities.

Turf is creating a plan for such a space; a community-rooted, non-commercial home for creativity, that is built to last.

📣 ANNOUNCEMENT: We're pleased to announce our programme for 2026, FUTURE VISIONS.

Future Visions is an invitation to pause, sense and imagine.

Across three exhibitions, we'll explore how shifting built and natural environments shape connection, belonging and care. In a culture of urgency, we propose another rhythm - one of listening, play, rest and collective imagination.

As we move forward in our journey to set up a permanent home for ourselves in Croydon, we invite our community to gather, visualise, and plot this shared future with us. Our 2026 programme forms a constellation of encounters, blurring artwork and environment, visitor and participant.

First we'll gather at the spring equinox for Tending, an exhibition building on At the Meadow's Edge with work from Lina Ivanova, Becky Lyon, Meera Shakti Osbourne and Laura Selby. Stay tuned for further details 🌀

Artworks awakening the senses are shared alongside spaces for rest and reflection, with work from Lina Ivanova [@linavanova], Becky Lyon [@elastic_fiction], Meera Shakti Osborne [@mso_4rt] and Laura Selby [@laura_selb]. Taking place between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice, a full public programme of events will run alongside our gallery exhibition.

Blending miniature dioramas and immersive technology, you are invited to explore futuristic habitats surrounded by rainforest, ocean, desert and grassland landscapes.

Drawing inspiration from BIOS-3, BioShock and the iconic Windows XP wallpaper, Prefab Paradise invites you to reimagine what a "perfect world" could look like. Created alongside workshops with young people from Art Press [@itsartpress] and Croydon School of Art [@croydon_school_of_art], the exhibition weaves together worldbuilding & collective imagination.

Co-creating a public artwork: creating ideas for public art at Ruskin Square 💭

Join Croydon artist-led space Turf Projects and Turf studio artists for a creative workshop to gather early ideas for public artwork and public space for a new development at Ruskin Square.

Together, we’ll look at the space and its surroundings, and then use simple creative prompts and layered drawing methods to imagine what public art here could be like.

What local stories, memories & functions could be incorporated into it? How might the artwork feel like part of the landscape and uses of the future space? Where could it be located? What could it be made of?

You don’t need to be an artist to take part! We’re especially keen to hear from local residents, nearby workers, young people, community groups and anyone with a connection to this space and Croydon.

This is an early-stage workshop to gather ideas. The ideas shared will become a short concept document for the development’s project team, grounding future public art proposals in local voices & needs. You’ll also get to learn about the process and timeline of developing work like this!

On the last day I invited my fellow Turfies to come print with me. It was so much fun! We made dry points on my little X cut Express. Really productive, everyone made some beautiful work, and it was a good social event. A wee bit of rum helped us laugh a lot and argue about which Island has the best rum. Drawing The Space Inside My Hand invites participants to explore drawing as a sensory and embodied practice. Taking place during the exhibition Tending, the workshop uses observational drawing to deepen ways of sensing and feeling.

Participants will draw from the ceramic pieces in the show, as well as their own hands and each other’s, considering the hand as our first tool for making and tending.

The session encourages slow looking, presence, and learning through the body. This workshop is open to the public and no prior drawing experience is required.
