I want to share a bit about my experience working on the artwork for the single “Nafas” by Dipha Barus and Hindia.
Like many people navigating life these days, I often find myself feeling anxious. Each breath can feel shadowed by an invisible fear. So when I first heard the lyrics of this song, I immediately related to it. The lyrics are powerful to me, especially the part that touches on intergenerational trauma.
The process of creating this collage felt closely aligned with the song’s theme, accompanied by that same sense of anxiety. At the same time, caring for my family and handling other work added pressure, as I wondered whether I could finish the piece on time. To complicate matters, this commission required an analog collage, while most of my commission works are digital. Analog collage takes more time to gather materials (since you can’t rely on keywords), and once elements are cut and pasted, revisions are not easy.
The first elements I chose were images of a brain, machinery, and rising smoke, visuals that, to me, reflect the mental exhaustion caused by anxiety. I also included an image of a chain being cut by scissors, inspired by the lyrics about making the decision to break intergenerational trauma. Through this piece, I tried to combine a sense of mental overload, dark thoughts, and a glimpse of hope.
Despite the anxiety, everything eventually came together. I’m really happy with how it turned out, and even happier that Dipha and Robin liked the final result. Thank you for the trust!
I hope this work can accompany you while listening to “Nafas”.
