Excited to share my latest Tibetan calligraphy artworks in the next two posts!

འགོག་རྒོལ་བྱེད་པ།
[to] RESIST

I made these artworks, la-la-la-lost in the feelings of current political ramifications, inspired by the graphic nature of traditional propaganda posters and yet unaware of how to verbalize a call-to-action that’s rooted in the right motivation with sustainable compassion. Resistance imbued with Dharma.

I am just a basic, ordinary human after all, plagued by the same mental poisons we all share, so who am I to speak on such subjects?

Luckily, during a dissociative threads doom-scrolling session I came across a post from the head lama at the @rimecenter in Kansas City, Lama Matthew Palden Gocha, who provides a wonderful commentary on Resistance Embodying the Bodhisattva Spirit and implementing the Six Paramitas ( generosity, ethical conduct, patience, diligence, meditative concentration, wisdom) into our actions.

Lama teaches that it’s important to not just work towards alleviating the suffering in the world but to also transform our own hearts and minds in the process - for in understanding our shared humanity and interconnectedness, our resistance becomes more than a reaction - it becomes a mindful, sustained commitment to alleviating suffering and building a more just and compassionate society for all.

“Through all my births, may I never be separated from the perfect lama, and bask in the glory of the Dharma. May the qualities of the paths and stages be perfected, and may I quickly attain the state of Vajradhara!”

The four preliminaries create the framework for the entire path and stages of the higher practices. One-by-one, the practitioner navigates through these four foundational practices by generating refuge and bodhicitta, accumulating merit, purifying obstacles and lastly, the blessing of guru yoga. These instructions serve the practitioner much in the same way a construction contractor relies on a set of detailed plans and blueprints in order to know how a building should be built. As I’ve been exploring working in different mediums, this artwork is a culmination of both Tibetan calligraphy and traditional, photographic portraiture through the use of cyanotype printmaking to create a visual blueprint for training the mind.

Scribed in cyanotype chemistry, this four line supplication from the Dorje Chang Tungma details the quintessence of guru yoga, the practice of merging one’s mind with the wisdom mind of the guru in order to discover the very same wisdom mind - inseparable emptiness and knowing - in ourselves. The realization, or wisdom of enlightenment itself, is called the Dharmakaya, the body of truth. Synonymous with Vajradhara Buddha (Dorje Chang), the Dharmakaya is the source of all the manifestations of enlightenment.

When exposed to UV light, the cyanotype chemistry transforms into a rich, Prussian blue colour, mimicking the appearance of Vajradhara Buddha, depicted as a rich, dark blue colour. Like a mirage within the letters, my root guru, H.H Tashi Gyaltsan Rinpoche, emanates as the form of Dorje Chang, aiding the practitioner in the visualization of the guru yoga practice. We visualize the guru as Dorje Chang to have the purest regard and relationship with the guru, which is no other than Buddha in this form named Dorje Chang.

Like a guru yoga, the melding of traditional Buddhist practices and artistic mediums becomes a contemporary visual aid, inspiring & setting the right tone for the fruition of our practice.

Excited to share my latest Tibetan calligraphy artworks in the next two posts!

འགོག་རྒོལ་བྱེད་པ།
[to] RESIST

I made these artworks, la-la-la-lost in the feelings of current political ramifications, inspired by the graphic nature of traditional propaganda posters and yetunaware of how to verbalize a call-to-action that’s rooted in the right motivation with sustainable compassion.

International Tibetan Calligraphy Day

In lieu of posting Tibetan Calligraphy artworks on this special day, I wanted to share this portrait of one of the best in the game, my teacher & friend, Lama Tsering Tashi Mannox; aka: ༄། གི་གུ་བླ་མ་ཆེན་པོ ། (The Great Gigu Lama of the Karma Kaygu)

This portrait of Lama la was made in the beautiful building of Wisdom Publications after Lama completed filming his latest Tibetan Calligraphy Course covering the Uchen script style

Classically stylized to retain continuity with portraits of the many Vajrayana Masters of old Tibet and, of course, no portrait would be complete without a modern flair of posh, British fashion, detailed in the western style pants and sneakers

Hand printed in my studio as a cyanotype which I’ve bleached and toned in coffee

Lama served the Buddha Dharma as a monk for 20 years, learning the many styles of Tibetan Dharma Art, guided carefully by an extensive list of great Masters including H.H. the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, H.E. Situ Rinpoché, Kalu Rinpoche, & Master Sherab Palden Beru

It was however, the late Akong Tulku Rinpoche who became Lama’s ‘Spiritual Father,’ & encouraged & kept a close eye on Lamas progress as a calligraphy artist. Akong Rinpoche guided and raised the quality of Lamas penmanship with the attitude of: there is no second best

Lamas dedication lies, first & foremost, in the practice of Buddha Dharma, & in the preservation & continuation of Tibet’s vast, spiritual language

It’s an incredibly great honor that the causes & conditions of past karmic imprints have united me with a teacher of such esteem, whose knowledge, practice, and influence is truly vast and limitless

Thank you for your guidance, inspiration, your strict adherence to Buddha Dharma, & for instilling in me the values & dedication to the art of Tibetan Calligraphy of which Akung Rinpoche instilled in you!

࿇ New Artwork Available ࿇

སྡུག་བསྔལ
Suffering

This free-brush artwork is an ume abbreviation of the word ‘Suffering,’ composed of a Petsug script style from Golok, in East Tibet.

Below, I have calligraphed a line from The Four Immeasurables Prayer which reads:

“May all sentient beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering!”

Vajrayana practices are brilliantly designed methods to help us uncover awakened qualities that are innate in our being but remain out of our reach because of habitual patterns.

Lama Döndrup explains that our habitual way of being is built on a foundation of experiencing a divide between self and other; seeing ourselves and others as separate entities & having transactional exchanges that are often guided by an agenda of some sort. When the heart is moving from this habitual, ordinary point of view, we don’t experience love, compassion, joy, and equanimity as boundless.

When we fixate on the stream of thoughts that continuously create this sense of a separate self, we constrict that unimpeded flow and only experience a sliver of the awakened qualities that are available to us.

When we let go of our personal agendas and the perceived divide between self and other and turn our mind one-pointedly in the direction of these qualities, we naturally align ourselves with our innate, unbounded heart. We inhabit it and effortlessly radiate these limitless qualities, which are inherent in our being. These awakened qualities flow from the vast, openness of mind.

So we must allow times of difficulty to be an opportunity to open our hearts with courage, generate wishes for others’ well-being, act on behalf of others, and rest in our indestructible, boundless nature which is inseparable from love, compassion, joy, and equanimity.

༄ May all sentient beings have happiness and the causes of happiness!

May all sentient beings be free from suffering & the causes of suffering!

May all sentient beings have the supreme bliss which is free from all suffering!

May all sentient beings live in the great equanimity, which is free from all attachment and aversion!

“When the clouds vanish, what else can cover the sun?”

This was one of those ‘in the moment’ photographs I made of Lama @tashimannox as we scurried to higher ground, chasing the last moments of light before the sun dipped below the Gorges d’Oppedette

Lama was sporting the finest in Dharma wear, the artwork of which he created in collaboration with @maharishi for their 30th Anniversary-Year of The Wood Dragon-Release

It was the way the sunlight illuminated the artwork on Lama’s jacket that caught my eye, which seemed to glisten & ‘flow’ with each step

Have you ever noticed the little ways the universe shows up in synchronicities, increased occurrence of Angel numbers, random moments which open up new perspectives?Spend enough time around these tantric masters, and you’re bound to witness moments of absolute magic in the ways they integrate Dharma teachings into every moment. It gets even more weird when those masters are also artists, because I swear the artwork’s imbued with enlightened qualities which continue to pop up in all sorts of ways, revealing new layers of teachings each time

Up to this point, I had been making Lama’s artwork the sole focus of my intention. It wasn’t until I came back to this frame almost two years later that made me sit back and smile, as it dawned on me just how interesting this photograph really is

During our walk, Lama had shared many stories on the nature of mind, so it’s of no surprise that this topic keeps showing up.Looking at this photograph, I see a completely different story being played out; a thangka-esque style photographic depiction of the path leading us to the recognition of our minds essence

The perspective here remains with the viewer, in that the story begins by seeing the Lama on the path ahead, separated by a layer of clouds…and if you look closely enough at the artwork on his jacket, you’ll see details of the Tibetan dragon flying through the clouds in search of the four pearls of wisdom. At the top of the path, sunlight blasts across the empty sky, illuminating the clouds which separate us from realizing the beauty beyond our deluded perspective…

It’s sunny and 90 ཾ in Kansas today…

I think that means Spring has sprung! The shop is growing with new offerings of original botanical monoprints!

Working in this medium, I’ve found a parallel, in both the simplistic visual & the mental process, within freebrush zen calligraphy of Japan, which Trungpa Rinpoche utilized and studied here in the west.

Just as the ink in a calligraphy stroke shows the quality of mind, working with monotypes, where you get one shot, forces you into the now.Rinpoche explains it as “Nowness, or the magic of the present moment, is what joins the wisdom of the past with the present.”

The link to the garden shop is in my bio!

Appreciate your support!

More artworks are coming soon…
