HWY 62 LOVE SONG
I wanted a gentle closer for my fIREHORSE lp and found it with this ode to my old community up in the High Desert of Joshua Tree, California. Producer Kevin Nolan put an easy going SoCal glimmer on the mix. Before moving to Nashville, I lived in the High Desert for seven years. There is only one road that gets you there from the lower desert, and that is Highway 62. I have dear friends in the region and love to return and play The Joshua Tree Music Festival or perhaps teach songwriting workshops with armed forces veterans involved. I am very grateful for all the time I was able to spend just staring at the sky in that sacred place. I have recorded this song before, but I wanted to do a full band treatment for one take, and this is it. A classic tune for a classic place that affects all lucky travelers who make it there for a night or two under the stars.
The wind was born up on Highway 62
Between the rocks and the canyons
the hawks, the sun, and the moon.
When you’re stuck in the city
with a whole lot of nothing to do
come on and travel up on our way
Everybody’s higher up on Highway 62
Only the snow covered mountains
the stars, the sun, and the moon
are looking down on you
Fire was born up on Highway 62
between the lightning bolts through the night
and a star shooting cross the sky
A red arrow’s in my heart up on Highway 62
between the turbines and military wings
between the Ricochet and Old Woman Springs
Quiet was born up on Highway 62
Between the shadows from the moonlight
Coyotes howling on a dark night
and the wind through my lazy head
and the songs of my friend, my friends
and the trucks on your roadway
and the bombs and the airplanes……………………………………………….

I was taken to the station & put on a train. My buddy said “see you next time.” I felt truly lucky. We covered “Factory Girl” last night in Yokohama. Always a fun one. This tour of Japan was so delicious. I played nine shows covering 54 original songs & a few covers by Lucinda Williams, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan on his birthday, Beatles, The Ramones, and The Stones of course. I heard Jon Dee Graham’s voice booming through the late night club speakers at @thumbsupyokohama & then crossed a bridge under the Yokohama moon & thought about all the friends I’ve lost along the way, and all the joy that is here on earth taking strong human form in the exhuberance of the Japanese. Domo arrigato gozimas to @cafegoatee & all who have made this adventure possible. Thanks to all the Japanese musicians who have learned my songs better than me. Thanks for putting me back in touch with the places I was when I wrote them. I started a new song last night after soaking in the hot baths at the Plumm Hotel. The voice memo demo will be on my Patreon page first. That platform gets all the raw tunes as downloads first, then as part of a completed album later. It’s the best way to get the true portrayal of my life’s work.Google Patreon Tim Easton & enjoy the goodies. In the meantime, may you all find joy in your lives someway & may you retain dignity & self-respect in this wild world.#Japan can teach you all about it.

Sometimes you find a river. Sometimes the river finds you. Up in the virgin forrests outside Kyoto the Yura River begins. It is one of the longer rivers in Japan that runs North to the Sea Of Japan rather than the pacific. We were parked next this river for two days & enjoyed the wild boar, venison, and BEAR CURRY that the Tautasha Lodge owner owner hunted in the area. The rainy season had begun. Green lushness everywhere & amazing veggies from the garden. I played a gig at the lodge & jammed a few @gratefuldead tunes with the amazing Taro Inoue on mandolin, who plays with Peter Rowan when he tours Japan & also had a picture of Bill Monroe holding him as a kiddo. He & his wife opened the set & they were the best opening band I’ve ever worked with. They were called ATOWA. Just beautiful songs & harmonies. Amazing stuff. Makes you want to write. Entering Osaka afterwards was like culture shock, but I played with some killer musicians there too. Then to Fukuyama where Bug&Rhino crushed it with more heartily played songs & harmonies. In Tokyo, Anya joined me on violin & also sang harmonies. Next is Yokohama to play the biggest headling show I’ve ever had in Japan @thumbsupyokohama w/ two different bands who have learned my songs!!! Thanks Keiji Matsumoto for filming this & taking me for the best meals of my life. Thanks Murakami San for the excellent driving. Here’s to more rivers in Japan.#FIFTYRIVERS #Japan

Happy Birthday Bobby Dylan of the Midwest. This Japanese band rules. I often use this Bob Dylan outtake to get a band warmed up. A tune that needs no explaining. You just play.I recorded it a decade back with @meganpalm @aaronleetasjan & @themccrarysistersmusic as the very first benefit we did for @safpaw & that video is on YouTube. I am on Japanese time now. Waking up at 8AM instead of 4AM.Matsumoto san & I are taking the bullet train to play in a Buddhist temple in Fukuyama today. Going from the peaceful mountains to Osaka was Intense. The band learned fIREHORSE tunes & played very well. Thanks all who attended this fun show. Kazuhiko Iwaki on lap steel. Kento Tani on bass.Takashi Yoshioka on drums. #japan #music @noon_cafe_nakazaki

Yesterday was the greatest culinary day of my life. It has been decided. Top to bottom, starting with a breakfast set at Dia Coffee in Nagoya (grandfather built roaster, father built grinder, vibes for days) then over to the town of Gifu for a lunch at a 400 year old spot called Nimonjiya with SECRET EEL RECIPES that go back 12 generations. This meal actually started with fried eel guts, peppered.Delicious. Afterwards we drove up to the Tautasha nature lodge where I am playing a show, and where the owner hunted the deer and grew the vegetables (Keiji Matsumoto cooked it shabu-shabu style open flame & oil in a pan) which we ate with bone broth and raw duck eggs for dipping plus local hot sauces. We enjoyed this meal on an oak table made from a tree the owner chopped down.He built the lodge. He played a damn good stride piano too.Total renaissance man.Often times, what makes a meal great is the company you keep & the vibe of the room, of course. Aces on all fronts. Morning to night.I thank my Japanese hosts for this incredible experience. Here’s to writing more songs & enjoying meals with friends all over the world.

I wish for all songwriters/artists to OWN THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION (i.e. a studio, the label, the master, & the actual song itself) & perhaps don’t fuss too much over the rough edges unless you want to make robot music for the AI set.The printer @kennedyprints reinforced that with me when I visited him in his Detroit studio. Here in Japan I just sang “I lit out from Defiance” instead of “set out” which is a small thing not to fuss about & also lets me know the Grateful Dead had a heavier influence on my rolling with it attitude towards songwriting than pop artists. Either path can be fun. I have surrendered to the @folk_alliance route long ago & I have a happier & longer path because of that gentle acceptance. This song NEVER PUNCH THE CLOCK AGAIN could be about a roustabout or it could also stand as a rhyming metaphor for my life in the music business.Either way, Kevin Nolan produced it with more of a Little Feat style on the fIREHORSE album. This is the more bluegrass/folk arrangement I do when I play solo acoustic. Matt The Electrician & I are running a song & fishing camp in the High Sierra Mountains of California this September. You should come hang out and write & fish with us.Send me a note. I’ll hook you up.Aha.I didn’t set out to make that Dad pun, but fishing & songwriting are more similar than you would think.@gratefuldead

I love playing DOBU6 in Toyama, Japan. I made a live album here two years ago & put it on my Patreon page, where all the nuggets go. Here’s a few clips from the show two nights ago. I started tagging a Ramones tune at the end of one song! I also played a few piano tunes. The next day I played in Nagoya & it was just an incredible night of joy & music & friends. I think the food here really brings the game up. We had truck stop sushi that blew my mind. I am so incredibly lucky to be able to tour back in this amazing country where I lived for three years as a kiddo. That experience made a traveler out of me.I have not led a stagnant life.It is nice to slow down once in a while. Today is a day off outside Kyoto. I will find a quiet place to sit still.I cannot believe I have toured Australia, Alaska, & Japan so far on this Fire Horse year. Films by @nekopoki2022
