Before the red carpet. Before the trophy. There's the journey. You know, the journey of late nights, creative risks, and community, and then the moment it all leads to: that 2026 GRAMMY nomination.
Lila Iké (Best Reggae Album), Michael Mayo (Best Jazz Performance & Best Jazz Vocal Album), and Queen Sheba (Best Spoken Word Poetry Album) open up about their artistic journey in this episode of #RoadToTheGRAMMYS. “HEAVY IS THE CROWN”
1st, I want to thank God.
2nd, I want to thank my manager, Rita & @aka_nlo 🩷💚 #aka
3rd - Jodine! For keeping me together!

To @angelinajolie for having a real conversation with me 🤗
The last 6 months have stretched me in ways I do not even have language for.
Moments like today do not come from luck. I know, I know—luck is where hard work and opportunity meet—but this is way more than that. This is risk, loss, sacrifice, discipline, faith, and a whole lot of showing up when nobody is watching.
I’m still in awe—in the depth of the marrow of my bones—that I am 3x Grammy-nominated. YOU might get tired of hearing it- that truth will not shake me.
The Grammy world was far away… something other people got to touch. And now I am walking in it. Yes—I’m going to say it. I earned that.
Being a part of the Recording Academy has opened doors that, if I am honest, I would not have even been invited into before. Today was one of those rooms. One of those moments where you realize—YOU believed in you.
From the deep, tho.
Nope-I have not felt perfectly aligned. Not even close. I have felt stretched, challenged, uncomfortable… like my spirit is detoxing from old versions of me. Like I am breaking patterns—choosing not to call back when my gut already said no, walking away sooner instead of staying to “see,” trusting my discernment the first time instead of the third. Like I am stepping out of loops I used to live in.
And … God keeps blessing me.
That part is humbling. Cuz I don’t listen. I doubt. I question. Ugh. The blessings are overwhelming. That part is what has me crying.
Even in the middle of the clawing at the walls… I keep showing up.
If you are in a space where nothing feels clear, where growth feels like your last needle just rolled under the couch, where the work feels heavy and the reward feels delayed-
Keep going.
Break the pattern.
Jump out of the loop.
Believe yourself faster.
Listen when your spirit speaks.
The first time.
I’mma tell you what @thasongbird told me the other day “You still got tomorrow, friend.”
Love 💗 Queen Sheba

Being a special guest of the Heavy Hitters event this past Tuesday wasn’t about performing.
It was about releasing.
Releasing what I’ve outgrown. Releasing what I’ve been carrying. Releasing the parts of me that stayed too long where they no longer belonged.
Perfoming alongside @thequeensheba, I was reminded that choosing myself means no longer waiting for validation to confirm what I already know. The right people, opportunities, and moments have a way of finding me when I’m willing to stand fully in who I am.
This night wasn’t validation. It was confirmation.
Confirmation that I am always in the right place at the right time. Confirmation that what is meant for me will never miss me. Confirmation that it always works out. It always has.
A special shoutout to you Queen for having me apart and shoutout to @muvathecreator for curating such a dope, magical evening and creating space for artists, connection, and genuine expression.
Grateful for the moment. Grateful for the lesson. Grateful for the music.

Last night on the rooftop was a reminder.
Performing “It Will Pass”
under the Atlanta sky while the city kept breathing around us. No theatrics. No pretending. Just truth, timing, and crying on stage.
Healed people don’t act like this.
@jackiebazaarofficial absolutely floated through her song “I Cry.”
Beautifully done.
Deeply felt.
There is something about Spoken Word & live music on a rooftop in the summertime that reminds people they are still human. Still alive. You still have right now.
Thank you to everybody who stayed, listened, sang along, hugged somebody, tipped somebody, or simply allowed themselves to feel something for a moment.
Healing is not always loud.
Sometimes healing looks like a rooftop, a microphone, and making it through the week.
Thank you @heavyhittersatl @muvathecreator for reminding me … ‘Carpe YOLO’ 💛

Tonight was another transition.
Performed on a rooftop in downtown Atlanta with Author/Poet Michael Harriot and Comedian Rodney Perry. Took my pictures. Hugged people. Did my poems. Watched the room. Watched myself.
Then I left.
Not in a dramatic way.
In a “I think I’m growing” kind of way.
Spent years believing that words could crack open your chest. And you would make a small change, for yourself.
Most cases they do. You do.
Spent years believing that if I killed the room; the world would open.
That used to be true.
I used to think that *I*, as a poet, was enough.
Now the world wants documentation, consistency, visibility, packaging, branding, algorithms, clips, trailers for the live experience.
Meanwhile, I still come from the era of:
“you had to be there.”
I barely lift my phone at events because I want to be present.
And - it costs me.
Came home.
Fed Charlie sweet potatoes because apparently the German Shepherd union is protesting kibble, now.
Reorganized my house - again.
Sat down with salmon and sweet potatoes at midnight thinking about poetry, fame, grief, AI, survival, aging, reinvention, and how strange it feels when your life starts changing before your career fully catches up to it.
And realized, this is Memorial Weekend, and started laughing one of those head-shaking laughs.
“Healed People Don’t Act Like This”is becoming more than a poem. More than an album.
It’s becoming my next chapter.
❤️🩹
P.S. Stop blaming alcohol on you dropping your poem/piece. It’s an open mic. It’s ok. Just … I don’t know-Practice 🤷🏽♀️
PLEASE - stop saying “Can I start over?” - just … start over. Why are you asking us? Most people were scrolling, anyway. Just start over, we don’t know how the poem goes and who ‘gone check you?! 😎
Anddddd …(lol) why are you asking us what do we want to hear?! You know what we want to hear??? The one that is resonating with YOU right now; that is the one we will connect with. 🙏🏽🤍✨

31 years ago in a roach infested apartment in Norfolk, VA.
I turned the living room into a nursery. Posters. Painted the wall something happy. My mother flew down from Detroit and bought me a rocking chair 🪑 because “every new mother should have one.”
I had to put tape on the legs of my newborn son’s crib “just in case” the bugs decided to crawl from the carpet to his ears.
It never happened but I promised myself I would never be that poor again.
I’ve been hustling & “surviving” ever since.
Time to live.

Left - Feb 1st 2026 202lbs
Right - May 13th 2026 177lbs
Down 25lbs & avoiding my daily Coke Zero & a pack of M&Ms 😩
I was asked to testify about what Music Cares the non-profit arm of The Recording Academy & @grammys had/has done for me. They, among other things, provide mental health resources and counseling lines, people to talk to.
People who don’t live this life can not comprehend how hard your faith, in yourself, can be tested, at times.
It’s difficult to see what depression looks like until you can step away from it.
Same as joy.
As a career artist, you’re always grinding, thinking, planning, strategizing & networking. And sometimes you need to talk to someone who can relate & not B$ you.
A lot of times, our physical health, or lack thereof, is tied to our mental health 🧠✨😊
And when I need comfort, I find my friend “food”. Oh-yeah… we go way back to childhood.
Phewwww 😮💨 it’s been a ride yall and every day I’m building my discipline to eat better and reintroduce exercise into my lifestyle.
I got burned out from running & cycling around the world LIKE an Olympic/Ironman athlete since 2009! I let “one” donut …cookie…cake, turn into pre diabetes & high cholesterol.
I am crawling my way back ❤️🩹
& I’m excited about the decisions I’m making.
Not perfect.
Not healed.
Healing ❤️🩹
I want to live.
My birthday is coming up - want to gift me something?
Gift me 12-months at Lifetime Fitness Buckhead.
No point in looking good on the outside if your heart ♥️ is on a rapid countdown.
To enjoy your life - you have to be around to live it.
Thank you to Music Cares for having someone to talk to.
Membership has its privileges.

Atlanta is really outside again 😂😭
If you needed a sign to put real clothes on, laugh too loud, flirt a little, hear a live band, and accidentally end up screaming “RUN THAT BACK!” at somebody’s poem… this is the sign.
TUESDAY, MAY 19
📍 Reverb ATL Rooftop
(across from Mercedes-Benz Stadium)

Show: 9PM
Weather permitting, we taking this whole thing upstairs under the stars.
Stars in the sky.
Stars on the stage.
And probably REWOP somewhere in the background showing her whole ass again 😭🍑
Featuring me + the brilliant Michael Harriot
Hosted chaos, open mic sign-up & beautiful foolishness with @mUVATHECREATOR
* LIVE BAND ALL NIGHT.
One thing about Atlanta creatives:
somebody is going to overshare,
somebody is going to heal mid-set,
somebody is going to flirt through a metaphor,
and somebody auntie is going to yell “TALK YO SH*T” before the appetizers arrive.
The city looks different from a rooftop.
Especially when the art is good.
Pull up.
Bring somebody fine.
Bring somebody funny.
Bring somebody who still believes nights like this matter.
