I had to ask @allysonfelix what it’s like still competing at the highest level at this stage of her career. Has the preparation changed compared to when she was younger?

I know football took a toll on my body over the years - so I figure at 40 your recovery and routine gotta become way more intentional.

She talked about learning her body, training smarter, and understanding what she needs to recover and still perform at an elite level. That wisdom and discipline matter just as much as talent when you’ve been doing it this long.

That’s what greatness is… evolving. 💯

@AllysonFelix added, “{Black Women} don’t get to have the joy that everyone else has in pregnancy”. She updated her will before giving birth to her son Trey; expecting to be in the same position she was while giving birth to her oldest child Camryn.

She always wanted more children, but wrestled with the decision. She also had to consider her husband Kenneth who experienced the trauma of her first birth from a different perspective. Ironically, it was Kenneth that gave her enough peace to try again.

Allyson Felix lived her life like Ricky Bobby, “If you’re not first you’re last”. All of her worth was tied up in winning gold medals. So much so there was embarrassment tied to silver medals. For so long wins & losses controlled who she was. Her happiness was tied to her results, & that’s a tough way to live.

Allyson Felix was one of Nike’s premier athletes. Standing up against the mega company was frightening, but it was imperative to protect female athletes’ maternal rights. Many other women had gone through the exact same thing Allyson did with Nike. She needed to be a voice for herself & them!

Allyson Felix’s Olympic medals couldn’t protect her from the perils of child birth. She was rushed into an emergency C-section 8 weeks early, & spent weeks watching her daughter Camryn fight for her life in the NICU.

Serena Williams had a similar experience, & @allysonfelix’s teammate died during child birth. Black women in the U.S. face a maternal mortality rate more than three times the rate of any other race, & Allyson Felix refuses to stay quiet!
