limen
A project on the cultural activation of closed properties + the relationship between culture and the city. For Athens, Greece and beyond.

@dexamenes and @thelimenproject kicked off Traditional, Illegal: The Food Edition - our first research trip together, embracing the spirit of liminality: a winery repurposed into a fascinating hospitality project with a strong cultural direction, activated before its season was scheduled to begin.
We made, tasted, discussed. We agreed and disagreed. We got acquainted with each other’s practices and each other’s worlds. Seeds were planted - already excited to watch them grow.
We want to thank everyone who participated and shared their energy, their gifts, and their trust.

An office at the end of a corridor on the 6th floor of Stoa Fix on Panepistimiou Street 59 becomes a third space.
Twelve artists lingering in the room through the presence of their work. A homely couch welcoming spontaneous talks among friends and strangers alike. The people from the neighbouring offices curiously peeking in as they head home. The evening-shift doormen finding company during the slowest hours of their day.
With the support of @city_of_athens_official and Youth Action Climate Fund by @bloombergdotorg.
In collaboration with @libraryresidency.
Special thanks to @sozitagood and @greeceinus, under the auspices and support of @minculturegr and @ekkomed_gr.

limen in Paris, France
Rather than treating the gap between exhibitions like dead time and closing down the building, @boursedecommerce came up with 'The Museum in Motion' concept.
Instead of a single opening night, the Pinault Collection has been activating its spaces progressively - one gallery at a time, one artist at a time - letting their new exhibition, Clair-obscur, emerge slowly across several weeks.

limen in Ljubljana, Slovenia
Cukrarna (@cukrarna.art), one of Ljubljana’s leading contemporary art galleries, used to be a sugar refinery. Built in 1828, it was destroyed by a fire in 1858 and later became a tobacco factory, a textile factory, a military barracks. It also acted as a homeless shelter as some of Ljubljana's residents who lost their homes in the devastating 1895 earthquake, which destroyed one-tenth of the city's buildings, lived in Cukrarna for a while.
During the Second World War, the cellars of the factory served as shelters. Afterwards, the building started to serve as a shelter for socially disadvantaged people and became a temporary home for construction company workers. In the early 1990s, the Cukrarna was emptied with the intention of renovating and changing it into a shopping center, but the plans never materialised.
In late 2018, after laying vacant, the building acquired new life. Due to Cukrarna’s status as a cultural monument, the building work took a conservative approach in which the appearance of the roof and the original outer walls with their 318 windows have been retained. A steel structure was inserted into the shell to support four white-cube gallery spaces. This structure is suspended from the roof and does not come into contact with either the ground or the external walls. A basement floor was added to the building, below the level of the Ljubljanica riverbed. It now acts as Slovenia’s largest exhibition space, hosting major Slovenian and international artists as well as a number of other events, beyond the cultural sphere. Cukrarna, sitting at the edge of the city centre, has also contributed to the regeneration of that part of the city, demonstrating how adaptive cultural reuse of industrial heritage can breathe new life into forgotten urban corners.

When we were setting up the exhibition, we knew attracting passersby to the sixth floor wouldn’t be easy. So we created a series of parallel events, each one opening a different doorway into the work and inviting in a wonderfully diverse mix of people.
The @astylabgr meetup filled the room with energy: ideas bouncing, assumptions challenged, generous and constructive feedback flowing in every direction.
The event by @ear.magazine opened up a thoughtful conversation about what truly matters for our cultural ecosystem, about seeds that eventually grow into creative and cultural practice.
The walks of memory and observation by @nafsication and @annstpl turned urban corners into sites of reflection and rediscovery.
And in the end, the greatest joy was hearing visitors say they had never been to a photography exhibition before or had never ventured upstairs in a stoa, opening up the discussion as to why creating welcoming cultural spaces matters for our cities.

Join us on Sunday!

We look forward to seeing you at the opening of the photography exhibition, The Third Space, on Tuesday, November 25th at 6:30 pm.
The Third Place is the first exhibition by limen, exploring spaces that exist in-between - between what was and what will be. These are places that are neither home nor work, but moments of pause, encounter, and possibility. Historically, third places were cafés or public squares; today they appear as buildings in transition, shifting neighborhoods, underground communities, digital spaces, or even inner emotional states.
The creatives participating in the exhibition are: Alexandros Goumas (@alexgou), Aris Askopoulos (@arisasko), Eleftheria Amolochiti (@ele_amolochiti), Elpida Spyrou (@elpidaspyrou_ ), Elya Pelletier @elllllllllllllly), Giorgos Parellis, Katerina Giannopoulou (@_katerina.giann_ ), Maria Michalinou (@momentscapturedmmk), Liliana Drekaj (@ldrekaj), Marili Zarkou (@marili_zarkou), Olivia Cowley (@ojac_ ), Simon Pera (@s.i.m.i.o)

This year, Frieze London was filled with works that resonated with limen’s quest for meaning found in transformation, thresholds, and states of becoming. We were particularly drawn to:
1. Fishermen by Yasmine El Meleegy (@yasmineelmeleegy), represented by Gypsum (@gypsumgallery), for recasting functional, mass-produced dinnerware as symbols of national hopes for self-sufficiency and showing that sometimes to mend is to shatter.
2. Mark on the wall, a series by Gauri Gill (@_gauri_gill_), represented by Vaehra Art (@vadehraartgallery), for documenting drawings made by local arts, children and teachers in government schools in Rajasthan, showing the creation of beauty, against the odds, under conditions of acute scarcity of resources.
3. Fern oblivion by Sam Moyer (@sammemoyer), represented by Sean Kelly (@seankellygallery), for transforming the fixedness of marble and granite fragments into fleeting, delicate, botanical gestures.
4. One fifty one (after all) by Katherine Hubbard, represented by Company (@companygallery) and selected by Nicole Eisenman (@nicoleeisenman) in the context of the Artist-to-Artist section, for transforming the home of the photographer’s mother into a true stage.
5. Semana a Semana by Teresa Lanceta (@teresalanceta), represented by Mira Madrid (@1miramadrid) and Mira Archiv (@2miraarchiv), for showing how stitching slowly and with care can help us find what we’re looking for, revealing itself thread by thread.

5. Semana a Semana by Teresa Lanceta (@teresalanceta), represented by Mira Madrid (@1miramadrid) and Mira Archiv (@2miraarchiv), for showing how stitching slowly and with care can help us find what we’re looking for, revealing itself thread by thread.
