🎙️Stefan Hürlemann

In his presentation “Process, Filter, Control,” Stefan reflects on the designer’s role as guide and filter — the one who absorbs complexity so that clients do not have to. Through project examples, he explores how much of the design process should be visible, when transparency serves the work, and when it creates confusion. At its core, the talk is a reflection on what it means to give direction rather than simply follow instruction, and why that distinction shapes the quality of every outcome.

Stefan Hürlemann is a founder, creative director, and educator based in Zurich. He is the co-founder of Skala Design, a graphic design studio working across branding and identity, with clients including Adidas, Apple, ETH Zurich, Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, MoMA, and Nike. His practice develops visual and didactic systems that reduce complexity and make information comprehensible, combining a rigorous approach to structure with a continuous observation of cultural change. He has lectured and led workshops internationally across cultures.

🎙️Maria Todorova

In her presentation “Passion as a Motivator,” Maria reflects on curiosity and passion as the greatest drivers of creative growth. Drawing on her experience as a designer and creative director, she explores the trap of conformism that can follow success, and the fear of failure that every creator must constantly resist. Her talk is a call to challenge ourselves daily, to surprise our clients and ourselves, and to remember that passion for work is contagious and that people rarely reject ideas that genuinely move them.

Maria Todorova holds a Master’s degree from the Bulgarian National Academy of Fine Arts. She began her career as an Art Director at McCann Sofia and later became Group Creative Director at Ogilvy. In 2010, she founded NEXT-DC, where she serves as CEO and Chief Creative Officer. NEXT-DC is a creative partner of the European Design Awards and Studio Komplekt. The agency helps local and international clients bridge strategy, art, and technology as they navigate an ever-changing environment. In 2021, Maria also founded and became curator of SHAPESHIFT Festival and Quotes Magazine, platforms exploring creativity, science, innovation, and culture. Together with her team, Maria has earned numerous prestigious international creative awards and recognitions.

In her presentation “Between Context and Realities: Designing Narrative Space,” Samina explores spatial design as a framework for shaping narrative, perception, and collective experience within cultural contexts. Drawing on personal reflections and selected exhibition and spatial design projects, she addresses the tensions between vision and limitation, permanence and improvisation, authorship and collaboration, and what it means to create within the realities that context imposes.

Samina Tanović is a Bosnian-Herzegovinian designer working across spatial design, exhibition design, scenography, and visual communication. Her practice focuses on the relationship between space, narrative, and audience experience, particularly within cultural and museum contexts. Through exhibitions, scenography, public events, and interdisciplinary collaborations, she explores how design shapes perception, memory, and collective experience. Her work often develops within complex social and institutional conditions, where creative decision-making becomes an essential part of the design process.

Celebrating International Design Day 🎉

Once a year, the global design community does something that does not happen nearly often enough. We stop, gather, and remind one another why design matters. Today, designers, educators, students, organisations, and communities across the world mark International Design Day.

Across continents and decades of practice, the belief stays the same: design can do more. It can connect people to place, turn ideas into experiences, and help communities see themselves in the spaces they inhabit.
