@thegroupofeight congratulates the 99 Go8 research partnerships which have been awarded almost $56 million in funding from Round 2 of the 2025 @arc_govau (ARC) Linkages Program. The Round awarded nearly $99.8 million to a total of 178 projects which link universities with industry, government, scientific and community organisations.

With the war in the Gulf leading to a reported 30% drop in the world’s supply of helium, there are calls for the gas – critical in the manufacture of computer chips and semi-conductors as well as the running of things like MRI machines – to be RE-listed as a critical mineral in Australia. So, what is it that makes a mineral “critical”? In this clip from our latest Debate@Go8 podcast episode, @universitywa Professor Marco Fiorentini, Director of ARC Centre in Critical Resources for the Future, explains just that.
Catch the full fascinating chat with Professor Fiorentini – where he also discusses the work of the Centre in training the geoscientists of the future, explains possible new and sustainable ways to find and mine our critical minerals (whatever they might be at the time), and challenges the familiar “doom and gloom” narrative around climate and resources -now by clicking on the SproutLink in the bio.

In the countdown to the Federal Budget being handed down in Canberra next week, @thegroupofeight says that the 2026–27 Federal Budget is a critical test of the Government’s commitment to productivity, innovation, and long‑term economic growth. The Budget must take the following decisive actions to stabilise and strengthen Australia’s research system:
1. Start the transition to funding the full economic cost of research (FEC).
2. Remove the $650m Medical Research Future Fund cap and unlock up to $1 billion for medical research each year.
3. Include the first steps to a multi-year plan to implement the SERD Final Report: Ambitious Australia.

Great news for four Group of Eight projects awarded funding from the Global Science & Technology Diplomacy Fund Strategic (GSTDF) Element Round 2. The projects from @sydney_uni, @unimelb and @adelaideuni cover sustainable agriculture, precision cancer radiotherapy, advanced manufacturing and AI and space exploration with one project partnered with Vietnam and three with Japan.
The GSTDF Strategic Element program is designed to support strategically important international science, research, and technology collaborations with partners in the Asia-Pacific region, and the announcement coincides with the visit to Australia of Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
@thegroupofeight is committed to deepening cooperation in priority technology areas with our Asia-Pacific partners, supporting economic resilience, technological capability and regional stability – increasingly important during this time of heightened global instability. In March we undertook our third High-Level Delegation to Japan in two years, which included a Roundtable at Keio University that examined how Australia and Japan can scale and diversify bilateral research collaboration and strengthen innovation ecosystems.

Across Go8 universities, compliance now runs to hundreds of overlapping legislative and regulatory requirements. This level of duplication isn’t a safeguard - it’s a handbrake on R&D, tying up researchers in compliance instead of discovery. The result is delay: in new medicines, cleaner energy, productivity gains and the innovations Australians rely on.
@thegroupofeightt has joined an alliance of nearly 30 groups representing small, medium and large businesses, and universities, that employ millions of Australians, calling on all governments to cut regulatory costs by 25 per cent to help consumers and businesses amid surging costs caused by the Middle East war.
Reducing red tape isn’t about lowering standards. It’s about getting out of our own way so research can deliver faster, real world results for the economy and the community.

The US @thenasciences was established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. This year it inducted 120 US and 25 international researchers.
The United States is by far the Go8's largest international research collaborator country. In 2024 we co-published 12,800 papers with the USA.
Western Australia has been “floating around like a bit of a raft” since the beginning of our planet, Professor Marco Fiorentini tells us in the latest Debate@Go8 podcast episode – OUT NOW. The @universityWA professor and Director of the ARC Centre in Critical Resources for the Future explains that this is why WA is not only a paradise for geologists wanting to study the world’s geological record (it’s kept him here for 25 years), but also the home to such vast deposits of minerals and resources.
Catch this latest Debate@Go8 episode where Professor Fiorentini discusses the work of the ARC Training Centre in Critical Resources for the Future in training the geoscientists of the future to find new, sustainable ways to find and mine our critical minerals (whatever they might be at the time) NOW by clicking on the SproutLink in the bio - or wherever you get your podcasts.

OUT NOW: the latest Debate@Go8 podcast episode. This time we’re talking critical minerals, new methods of mining and training the geoscientists whose job it will be to find new ways to locate, extract and process the resources of the future, with Professor Marco Fiorentini from @universitywa. He’s the Director of the ARC Centre in Critical Resources for the Future, which is a powerful collaboration involving four The Group of Eight universities - UWA, @adelaideuni, @ouranu and @uniofqld – industry and federal and state governments, to address the challenges of securing our future resources.
Catch this fascinating episode – which also challenges the familiar “doom and gloom” narrative around climate and resources, showing young people that science, innovation and research can offer real solutions, and meaningful careers, for the future - NOW by clicking on the SproutLink in the bio.
