It is with deep sadness that The Florey mourns the passing of FightMND co-founder and former Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher AO.
Neale was an extraordinary ambassador and tireless advocate in the fight against “the Beast” that is motor neurone disease, which he courageously lived with for more than a decade.
Through his powerful advocacy work, Neale helped to raise millions of dollars for researchers in Australia and around the world working to find a cure for MND.
“Neale’s advocacy and relentless determination have mobilised the nation. It is this powerful combination of advocacy and hope founded in research that will stand as Neale’s enduring gift,” Florey Executive Director Professor Peter van Wijngaarden said.

🎉CELEBRATING A MAJOR MILESTONE IN BRAIN HEALTH🎉
✨ 🧠 AEP AWARDED $30M TO TRANSFORM BRAIN HEALTH IN AUSTRALIA 🧠✨
The AEP are thrilled to announce we have received an additional $30 million through the MRFF to expand its groundbreaking brain health platform across the Australian health system. Using AI-powered technology that combines advanced MRI, genetics and cognitive testing, the AEP is establishing a national standard of care for epilepsy, helping Australians access faster diagnosis, more personalised treatment, and better long-term outcomes.
Most importantly, we are already seeing real impact for people living with epilepsy, and our team is incredibly proud of what has been achieved so far. This funding is a real step forward for people living with epilepsy and will allow us to help many more individuals and families across Australia in the years ahead.
This funding will enable the AEP to:
• Expand access to advanced diagnostics and specialist expertise across more hospitals and clinics nationally
• Scale precision epilepsy care across Australia
• Develop future solutions for neurological and mental health conditions beyond epilepsy
• Accelerate commercialisation and international expansion of Australian-developed health technology
Chief Investigator, Prof. Graeme Jackson said:
“The Australian Epilepsy Project has successfully established a high standard of care for epilepsy, bringing advanced research to clinical impact in a platform model that connects patients with their doctors and ongoing research.”
Executive Lead, Anton de Weger said:
“Securing this four-year federal investment allows us to move from a frontier clinical project to an established translation platform.”
“Scaling AI-enabled digital care pathways requires a multidisciplinary team spanning deep neurological science, startup and commercial acumen, clinical expertise, lived experience, data science and engineering.”
“This grant provides the precise runway needed to build innovative, regulated, automated tools that scale impact and change the standard of care for brain health, proving Australia can lead the world in health-tech commercialisation.”

It’s been wonderful working with Melbourne artist Antoinette Ferwerda (@AntoinetteFerwerda), who is generously raising funds for The Florey through the sale of her latest artwork, ‘Dreamscape’.
The Florey’s brain research aims to help improve the lives of people like Antoinette’s art assistant, Evania Klintberg, who is a young stroke survivor.

Hitting the headlines: The Florey’s Professor Anne-Louise Ponsonby in last weekend’s Sunday Age 📰
In the article, Professor Ponsonby explains the role individuals and governments play in reducing exposure to plastic-related chemicals.
“People can do something, sure,” says Ponsonby. “But governments are incorrect to put all the onus on individuals. Because we can’t control the plastic in the clothes we wear, or in the air.”

It was a privilege to welcome @oxford_uni Vice-Chancellor and neuroscientist Professor Irene Tracey to The Florey earlier this week.
Professor Tracey is one of the world’s leading experts in pain and consciousness research.
She met with members of our leadership team, including Professor Peter van Wijngaarden, Professor Clare Parish and Associate Professor Jess Nithianantharajah, to learn about the work of The Florey and tour some of our labs 🧠

We’re delighted to share ‘Dreamscape’, a large-scale, mixed media painting by Melbourne artist Antoinette Ferwerda, which is being generously auctioned off to help raise funds for The Florey.
“It’s very important for me to offer this artwork as something that will assist The Florey in its endeavours across all sorts of brain research,” Antoinette says.
Drawing on her fascination with the brain, the painting – which stands at almost 1.8m tall and 2.4m wide – represents brain activity during sleep, Antoinette says.
All proceeds from its sale will go directly to supporting vital brain research at The Florey 🧠
