Farewell to For the Feeling, vol. 3.

I hadn’t thrown a jam in close to 15 years. And now, I’m on a 3-year streak. It’s addictive, in a very weird way — it shows you how to think about every corner of an event that you can. And you still miss so many little things in the run-up.

It’s hard to find a moment to be still. Not because of the volume of the music, or the crowd, nor the nigh-obsession with timing. More so because there’s so much to take in.

And, if you’ve done it right, it’s a wellspring of the right kind of energy. The kind that keeps you awake until 3 AM, just because your phone won’t stop going off with reposts and all that madness.

So, taking in everything else, I did something I don’t usually do — I took some footy. Just wove my way carefully thru the crowd (yes, I know cypher etiquette, god damnit), and let the camera obscura capture some of the light and lift in the room.

Thanks so much to @dance.uchicago, @taps.uchicago, @preachartistry, @rubyredgyal, @ibrrraaah, @djkinggns, @tre_daniels_, @_luckylilpenny, @djbelly, @bravemonk, and EVERYONE that came through.

I’m very proud to announce For the Feeling, vol. 3. A 1v1 House Battle taking place in Chicago, Illinois on April 19th, 2026. And, to add to the thrills, we’ll be hosting TWO House Dance workshops the day before, April 18th, 2026. As usual — the whole weekend is free, and there will be more announcements and surprises to come.

Dear Friends & Luminaries of the Breaking and Hip-Hop Community,

If you’ve ever wondered (for all the strange reasons) where I got all this weird, nuanced passion for Breaking, sampling, Fusion Jazz, and literary references from — this man is at fault.

As soon as I reached 4-5 years old, Mr. Moses was putting me in front of a wood-enclosured Bose 701 system, and showing me how to very gently place the needle onto a record. He played me a lot of everything, but none more influential than Dexter Wansel’s Afro-Futurist tinged Fusion Jazz masterwork “Life on Mars.” He’d told me that he bought the album in 1976 while vacationing in San Diego, solely for the album art and title ALONE. Made perfect sense for the long-since bloomed sci-fi addict he was, and the music delivered on the promises that the design presented.

So imagine all of my wonderment seeing and hearing “Dad’s music” being so prevalent in my culture; making those connections as such a surprise, and holding them in the same reverence.

The few times I’ve shown Breaking footage to him, he did the same thing to me he’d done hearing me listen to Hip-Hop as a teenager — he’d call out the EXACT record, artist, and release year — marveling at the same things I did.

“Damn; y’all are still listening to this? Man, that’s great…that record is in the basement, you know? I think 4th shelf from the bottom, toward the left side…”

Happy Birthday, Dad. Keep playing this album just a little too loud; it’s wonderful hearing it in the background when I call home.
