Located on a natural clearing at the crest of an escarpment above Table Top Drive in Rangeville QLD, “Brook House” is a sculptural response to its elevated topography and ecological context. In collaboration with Ecru Landscape Architecture and Mark Winter Constructions, the design is positioned sensitively within the bushland plateau, capturing framed vistas to Table Top Mountain / Meewah and stretching toward the expansive north-eastern horizon.
Surrounded by essential koala habitat and classified BAL-FZ, the highest level of bushfire risk, the site required a highly strategic and environmentally responsible approach. Rigorous ecological and bushfire assessment informed a design that minimises disturbance to native vegetation while delivering resilient bushfire protection.
The permitted building envelope on the plateau, shaped a linear east–west arrangement with the single-loaded footprint optimally orientated north–south to enhance daylight access, promote natural ventilation, and strengthen the connection to the surrounding bushland. Along the northern elevation, an eco-pond edges the home, promoting biodiversity and reinforcing the connection to landscape.
Rammed earth walls and suspended concrete slabs with terraced green roofs establish a robust, low-maintenance material language that responds directly to bushfire constraints while providing substantial thermal mass. This combination stabilises internal temperatures throughout the year, supports passive sustainability performance, and allows the architecture to visually merge with the terrain.
