Positioned between Viking Bay and Louisa Bay in Broadstairs a chalk outcrop known as Preacher’s Knoll overlooks the rocky foreshore extending out to sea past the pool and tidal marker.

The composition is cropped through the aid of the camera viewfinder which frames the landscape where rocks meet sea. The concrete pool here frames a section of water and at certain times acts as a sky mirror.

The reflected light is inverted twice, once by the water and again by the mirror in the camera. Light is a crucial component throughout this project as it not only determines the photographic exposure but my intention is to use light as a physical component during later stages of the work, more on this soon…

A single vantage point over a year. The pool is a temporal anchor alternating between presence and absence. The tidal marker functions as a metronome alongside the fixed geometry of the concrete and the fluidity of water and weather.

This project maintains a single view over the course of one year, returning again and again to the same tidal pool. Around it, water advances and retreats, clouds gather and disperse, light lengthens and collapses into dusk.

While on location I often listen to @boardsofcanada music. When I started The Tidal Pool project they hadn’t released an album for thirteen years. After more than fifty posts that align clips of their back catalogue with my photos I’m delighted that in two weeks time ‘Inferno’ will be released! This clip, the haunting refrain at the end of ‘Prophecy at 1420 MHz’ is from that new album. Looking forward to the pre-release Inferno listening sessions and in London next week!

A tidal pool photographed from the same spot over a year — high tide, low tide, storms, stillness, first and last light.

In part this activity takes inspiration from land art and Robert Smithson’s idea that landscape is never static but always becoming, this series uses repetition to reveal what a single glance misses: that a place is not a thing, but a process.
