TOWER (2023)

Finally decided to release my college thesis film online!
Not sure why I waited so long, but better late than never.

TOWER is the 2nd chapter of a larger body of work titled “Somewhere Else” the 1st chapter is a film titled ROT. TOWER is by far the most ambitious animated project I’ve ever undertaken, the film is entirely animated on paper and hand-colored with alcohol markers. The film ended up being around 3000 frames (not that a big number means much, but def the craziest I’ve ever gone).

What started as an animated experiment with creatures and blobs syncing to @dandrohan ‘s organic and synthetic looping sounds turned into 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐰.
Made during 2024-2026, slowly chipping away at it between projects.

Check out our exclusive premiere for the third edition of @lafestivalofmovies, co-presented by @kinofilmcollection & @mezzaninefilm, taking place April 9-12.

The poster features art by @the.marooned and design by @jimchapa_.

With a lineup featuring Blue Heron, Maddie’s Secret, Chronovisor, With Hasan in Gaza, and more, the festival is co-founded by @chafedelbows and @smudgystuff, and takes place on the east side of Los Angeles at venues including @vidiots, @2220arts, @now_instant, and the @philosophical_research_society.

“I Felt My Size” a short animated film by @the.marooned

I Felt My Size is a meditation on the connection and framing to the outside world, portrayed through the eyes of little kid in their backyard.

After being endlessly cooped up in a dark room (during the production of my previous film) I Felt My Size was a project made to counter this suppressive period by artistically and physically connecting with nature. The film was approached using traditional, hand-drawn mediums and techniques to spend production time outside, sitting on grass and in the sun. A lot more was planned for the short film, but due to the 2020 pandemic, production was unexpectedly cut short and what was meant to be the trailer became the final short. I have many plans for the unused footage, as of now I Felt My Size stays as a relic of a warm memory.

At Folly Tree, we believe that compelling storytelling is vital for lasting environmental change. Conveying the scale, urgency, and real-life impact of ecological crises is one of today’s most pressing cultural challenges. The Dancing Tree Award aims to support new voices and unconventional approaches/projects that lean toward optimism and challenge the prevailing currents of nihilism and stagnation. We seek work that explores the complexity of our connection with the natural world in ways that are hopeful, inspiring, humorous, daring, exciting, quirky, provocative, weird, experimental, playful, irreverent, or surprisingly effective.
