On Wednesday, March 25, we invite knitters and everyone curious to our open workstation from 15-19 at Kvennaskolinn 🎉
We have our March “Knitting Repair Team”, Andy and Madison, with us to assess your own knitting machine and/or show you briefly how to use our sock machine and one of our double bed freshly cleaned and repaired knitting machines.
Andy Valentine from Walla Walla, WA has been a machine knitter since 2013.Her first machine, an antique circular sock machine, sparked a passion that has led her to continue to collect more than 20 antique and vintage knitting machines - most of which she has restored to full working order.Andy is particularly experienced restoring Brother and Silver Reed flatbed knitting machines, Passap v-bed machines and various circular sock machines.
Madison Berg @fancyfrogknits is a self taught multidisciplinary textile artist focusing on machine and hand knitting, sewing and embroidery. She lives in New York City, teaches machine knitting, repairs, restores and sells domestic knitting machines.
We are very lucky to have them!
Please tell us if you come in advance by Monday, March 23. via the email textillab@textilmidstod.is

This week we are running the third workshop of the Materials Dialogues platform within the framework of the EU-funded Tracks4Crafts @tracks4crafts project.
This time, the MaDeTrans team (@ele.albe and @sofiad_materialsresearch ) has reached Blönduós, Iceland, to lead a workshop based on the DIY Materials approach — working with locally abundant Icelandic resources.
The hosting pilot, the Icelandic Textile Center @textilmidstod,co-designed the workshop with us, making it a truly situated and local experience. On the first day, the team organised a foraging session around the town to explore available natural materials , here are some glimpses from this inspiring start.
Stay tuned to see how these materials will be transformed in the coming days!
A special thanks to the Icelandic Textile Center for hosting us.
This activity is part of the Horizon Europe project Tracks4Crafts, funded by the European Union 🇪🇺.

This great team reached out and came all the way from Garðabær Comprehensive School this week to work on a new product (🤫) in the TextileLab under the guidance of our lab team! Residency year series / September: Beyond the Textile Center
Time to look around! September at Ós Residency is great for any textile pursuit and suits digital weavers, natural dyers, and costume designers alike. But the summer and early fall months in Iceland also allow for more flexibility when it comes to travelling.
We’re often asked what we expect from our artists in residence in terms of time commitment. There is no strict schedule! We want to enable residents to work with focus and according to their own rhythm. We don’t expect you to work a certain number of hours per day - the studios are (almost) always open. Feel free to experiment, enjoy, explore!
This includes getting to know the area. Northwest Iceland is a sheep-farming region with many (textile) sites of interest.
September is the sheep-gathering season, with a range of related events, from the round-ups themselves (“réttir”) to concerts and dances. There are heritage museums, galleries, and cafés run by local farmers and craftspeople.
Residencies at Ós always include a free visit to the Textile Museum in Blönduós and the Ístex wool washery, which processes wool from all around the country. (Rebecca Mezoff wrote a great blog post about her visit a few years ago!) The textile museum is located right next door to the Textile Center and exhibits a unique collection of Icelandic national costumes, tools, and embroidery work.
If you want to apply for a September 2026 residency, please use the application form on our website, textilecenter.is!
