Telfer Stokes
Artist

I love this Telfer Stokes sculpture, it’s been quietly sitting in its place since my visit to his Pakefield studio in April. You can see it in Hām (Home. house. Village) from next Thursday! 14th - 17th May at 635 London Road South, Pakefield. @telferstokes

Coinciding with his upcoming solo show: ‘REORDERING’, Telfer Stokes (b. 1940, St Ives) and I will be hosting a double-take of in-conversations @aldeburgh_gallery on the 23rd and 24th of December!
Described as ‘bricollage’, Stokes’ discipline of steel welding is an unruly, methodical, and impressive practise. Exploring the reinvention and transformation of three-dimensional space, Telfer’s dexterity to create these forms remains a ritualistic practice in his day-to-day routine, a rite which now forms twenty of the artist’s eighty-four years of life.
Alongside an extensive career in visual books (with 20 publications under his own publishing house), Stokes’ sculptural work has built him an impressive resumé of group and solo exhibitions at The Redfern Gallery @theredferngallery, Serpentine Gallery @serpentineuk, MoMA @themuseumofmodernart, Austin/Desmond Fine Art @austin_desmond_fine_art, and Kettle’s Yard @kettlesyard respectively.
As the son of Margaret Mellis and Adrian Stokes, and step-son to Francis Davison, Telfer’s family were a crucial part of the avant-garde, Modernist art movement in St Ives. Remaining faithful to his connection with the coast, he now runs his family's artist estates from his current base of Southwold in East Anglia to conserve their legacies.
Come and hear about the tremendous body of work Telfer has developed over the last year for this latest project, and thensome, in our discussions next month!
REORDERING runs between 19/12/24 - 24/12/24
