An introduction to me and my work for all the new people here and a refresher for those who know my graphic memoir, The Best We Could Do, but not so much about NOWHERELAND, the book I’m working on now. My name is Thi Bui. I’m a nonfiction writer who also draws. In January I started a Substack called Before You Die, Dammit so I can share 1-3 shorter pieces a week with you as I do news summaries, original reporting, and political analysis in my own special combo of smart, sad, and mad. With graphics! I’m leaving Instagram and Facebook by the end of the year because I’m tired of making money for Zuck. Let’s blow this joint and go where your attention span (and mine) can grow back.

Read all my pieces at teabuoy.substack.com

Brand new piece up today! THIRD COUNTRY DEPORTATIONS, PART 2: regular people trying to survive while the government pilot tests human trafficking.

Part 1 was THIRD COUNTRY DEPORTATIONS: mutherfuckers aren’t even sending people back to the right country anymore.

Thank you for following my work. The substack is free to read and share. Please do! If you’d like to support me, the best way right now is to sign up for a paid subscription or founding member donation. I appreciate you all.

“Thi Reads the News” is my rough notes on what is happening with ICE, distilled into comics that are easier to digest and remember so we can see more clearly, and hopefully take action.

New year, new beautiful website, thanks to the homie @kimnguyen.design ! I don’t post about everything but I’ll just say these last couple years have kicked my ass and I still struggle to get up most days. To all the artists hustling, the survivors striving and thriving, the single parents just…doing the million things you do – I’m just trying to do like you.

If the premise of NOWHERELAND is that our great dysfunction is creating limbo spaces – prisons, detention centers, border camps, third countries – into which people can be disappeared and forgotten, what am I to make of the existence of the Angola Prison Rodeo, the opposite of invisible? Where prisoners are treated like game show contestants or circus clowns, or made public examples, for the sheer spectacle and the entertainment of the masses?

Wrote about my trip to the Angola Prison Rodeo over at Before You Die, Dammit.

Feel very lucky to get to live like a hermit when I need to focus on a deadline and then emerge for a friend’s pop up and spontaneously hang out with a dozen different friends there too. 💛💛💛 Thanks for creating some Sài Gòn vibes in New Orleans @xanhnola @anhroux , this is making my summer.

Wrote a quick report on Louisiana politics in the season of the Callais decision and people declaring that New Orleans is doomed. Pay attention to this movement to recall the Governor, Attorney General, and East Baton Rouge Mayor-President! Follow and give props to @louisianadeservesbetter to let people know where to sign the petition!

I have an ask. If you were one of the many readers who sent me a beautiful, heartfelt letter, email, or DM over the years about what The Best We Could Do meant to you, please know that I read it and loved it. I just couldn’t keep up with writing back to people without losing momentum on my work. I honestly was overwhelmed by your vulnerability and didn’t know how to respond in the moment without making it a whole job to keep up with correspondence. So I didn’t. Please forgive me.

Would you please write to me again? This time, in a format I can immortalize in the next edition of the book? How it works is you go to my website, upload 100 words or less, along with a photo of you and a release form. I will select some of these and weave them together into a comic, maybe. Or illustrate each person separately. I won’t know until I see them all. We’ll co-create something.

And it will come out next May, in the beautiful tenth anniversary edition that Abrams ComicArts is putting together this year. I’ll be including some new material in addition to the portraits and testimonials.

Thank you! Deadline is May 27 because ya girl’s gotta draw all of this. It’ll be a summer of love.

Wrote a quick and dirty summary of US history to frame how MAGA is this moment’s backlash against the progress made during the Civil Rights movement, and part of the long, messy story of American democracy from slavery to the present. Slide 4 is 22-year old me at UC Berkeley in front of my sculpture, “us.” I’m covering up the empty spot where a face is missing. I double majored in Art and Legal Studies and have been thinking about this stuff for a while. Last two slides are from the great Stacey Abrams’ substack, Assembly Notes.

A reminder I’m leaving Instagram and Facebook this year, so you should follow or subscribe to my substack, Before You Die, Dammit. The full essay is there.
