Launching our new title this year, te magazine N°4 𝚂𝚙𝚒𝚗𝚊𝚕 𝙼𝚎𝚖𝚘𝚛𝚢 《脊柱记忆》. Orders now available on our website, link in bio!
🦒🦆🐎🐄🐻🦌🐦⬛🦜🐅🐈
Starting from the spine, the very pillar of life, issue 4 of te magazine focuses on nonhuman animals to explore the manipulation of their bodies alongside themes of perception and empathy. This fourth issue does not offer answers; instead, it comprises reflections and imaginations, as most contributors have long-standing experiences with or ongoing research on animals. Through observation, education, painting, writing, and image-making, they seek to loosen the existing “ethical relationships” and “orderly rules.” Is it possible to envision a relatively equal multispecies world? Can we relearn how to coexist with “the other” through a more humble and introspective lens? Issue 4 offers no definitive answers; instead, it invites readers to inhabit the bodies of others, to feel and acknowledge them. A slow exchange occurs that reopens our imagination and generates a relationship that has yet to be named.
𓇻 Featuring 10 contributions across disciplines.

The cover image of 𝙩𝙚 𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙚 𝟰 𝙎𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙮 courtesy of @robert_zhao, a sambar deer in Singapore—a place where the city and forest coexist, subtly shaping locals’ understanding and observational approaches to species. Zhao turns his attention to the “in-between forms” of life within the urban environment. His writing, 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙊𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨: 𝙒𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙣𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙨 𝘼𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙡, comprises observational fragments collected during his travels, documenting a series of unexpected coexistences between non-human life and manmade structures. In Zhao’s view, true ecology may not reside in the distant “wild,” but rather lurks in everyday life at the intersection of city and forest.
In Zhao’s thermal imagery, the deer glows through the heat of its body, sharing the same terrain as the distant human-lit towers. Echoing this layer of presence, the title of the magazine was printed in a fluorescent spot color, giving it a subtle, glowing effect.

📚 Digital publication: ‘The Borderless Shelf: Re-imagining a Library Space’
Last summer, @te.editions’ residency as @asymmetryartorg Librarians-in-Residence unfolded across New York City and London, travelling farther than we had imagined. ‘The Borderless Shelf: Re-imagining a Library Space’ is a digital publication that documents these encounters and continues to hold and circulate the ideas, conversations, and practices that emerged during, and beyond, the programmes we organised together.
The publication features te editions’ conversations with reading rooms and bookshops, reflections on the Drifting Backpack initiative, and a commissioned essay by our Curatorial Fellow Sharon X. Liu @sharonxyza. Sharon’s text investigates the Chinese literati Tian Han’s studies and social life during the Taishō period in Tokyo, tracing a once-existing transnational cosmopolitanism and asking: how might we imagine, and create new connections and solidarities in the present moment?
By sharing this publication, we hope to encourage reading as a communal event, and the library as a porous site that moves between the singular and transmission, allowing conversations to continue, as reading is about us all.
