We are very excited to announce TD Reade: cancel my prayer • a solo online exhibition featuring 12 works by @tdreade ! View all of the works now at project-gallery.com/tdreade • link in bio.
∴ ∵ ∴
TD Reade is a self taught artist, in private collections across Europe, USA, South America, and Asia living and working in Melbourne, Australia.
∴ ∵ ∴
TD Reade’s practice examines the disjunctions that emerge within seemingly ordinary moments, positioning the routine as a site of latent tension. His paintings foreground figures caught within the choreography of social performance, highlighting how engagement is sustained through subtle negotiations of posture, glance, and proximity, gestures that simultaneously express intimacy and reinforce hierarchies. What emerges is not a seamless choreography but a field of tension, where the maintenance of coherence is continually unsettled by the pressures of public visibility, internal sentiment and the shifting evaluation of one’s station.

In Reade’s work, social interaction is framed less as a transparent exchange than as an ongoing performance that subjects the individual to forms of scrutiny, expectation, and judgment. The familiar setting becomes charged precisely because it reveals the precariousness of belonging: recognition is contingent, and one’s position within the collective can be affirmed or destabilized by the smallest cues. These dynamics foreground the uncertainty of power, showing how authority and deference circulate fluidly through moments that appear otherwise routine.

Rather than resolving such tensions, Reade’s compositions sustain them. The works refuse narrative closure, offering instead a space where the visible and the implied coexist. This suspension underscores how interpersonal station is never fixed but must be repeatedly enacted and recalibrated within the collective gaze. Pressures, obligations, and unspoken structures underpin social relations. The tension lies in the balance between genuine connection and the necessity of playing a role.

Also sometimes he just does whatever…
∴ ∵ ∴
Thank you TD Reade for sharing your work with us, we can’t wait to share this amazing show with all of you. x

old painting from the olden days before i discovered acrylic. "Paintings to snort coke in front of (1)", I forget the dimensions but its oil on like Fabriano hot press i think?? From the group show A Study Of Darkness organized by @koan.shdw, may have been my first showing and first time selling? Someone in Vegas wanted a painting of Prince Harry smoking a dart for some reason. I know I always say this but i'm definitely highly possibly potentially considering going back to oil painting, There's something so idk nice about it?

Material test

Acrylic and soft washed play sand on board

51x41cm

2025

I’ve been testing out a few different bits and bobs recently while simultaneously being supremely unproductive. Did this one in a couple of stages after reading a Lisa Yuskavage blog post from about a decade ago. It sat on the floor for an amount of time entirely unnecessary for the creation of an acrylic painting, but here we are. I think it came out sorta cute in the end, like a PTCG full art rainbow rare if you’re into that sorta thing?

“Untitled” (rejected painting for magazine)
Acrylic on board
60x50cm
2025

I was working on this for inclusion in the next edition of SuperPotionLabs Save Files book but it wasn’t quite thematically suitable in the end so though I’d post it now instead of just painting over it haha. Had been looking at a lot of 80s John Pound illustration for inspiration here. Also if anyone is interested Sanji is my favourite, obviously. I’m still super behind so no spoilers thanks. I think the painting turned out ok, I kinda like the framing as a means of portraying the indifference to the proceedings.

“Content crisis”
Acrylic on board
60x50cm
2025

Haven’t posted anything new in a while. I’ve got a bunch of stuff sitting kinda half finished, sometimes it’s tough to get the momentum to turn them out I suppose? This was one of them so yay for productivity. Meanwhile does anyone else struggle to photograph their work? It’s always so hard to get it to look like IRL, sometimes even between individual photos at different distances. Idk maybe it’s just my dirty phone?

MINIOTICS presents a synaptic mapping of Pop Gun’s art-world; Nodes of international artists are connected in a schematic display of social and institutional vectors, advancing the discourse of Network Painting, and rendering physical the resinous scaffolds of social labor. On the surface, the exhibition will appear as 130+ MINIONS, ranging from literal yellow henchmen from the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise, to conceptual gestures. Artists from New York City to Chicago, to San Francisco, Providence, Guadalajara, Melbourne, Bogotá, Stockholm and more, speak to common experience in minionese, contextualizing the “banana” babblings of scene discourse within an absurdist world-wide scheme.

This one was doing my head in, started a bunch of different things over a month or so before doing this painting the night before I needed to send something. I think it sorta came out cute though? Good insight to how I was feeling about minions at that very moment I guess lol. lil self portrait on the back.

Huge thanks to @gunlagoon and @___trinity1for inviting me to participate in the show! @popgunartoff site exhibition at @weather_proof Chicago opens March 13th and runs through to April 13th. If you’re in the area be sure to go check it out.

Acrylic on board
2025

Goodness, I haven’t posted in so long. I’ve got a bunch of stuff on the stove I can’t show just yet. There’s a few fun things coming up, so in the meantime here’s an oil painting I did at the end of last year. I don’t often use oils these days to kept it work OHS for Ralph but I got some good solvent alternatives advice from a couple of loverly people on here so I’ve been slowly weening myself from acrylics. Idk let’s see what happens haha. This painting is untitled and is 45x30cm in size. It’s definitely interesting trying to translate material processes when you’re used to working with a specific medium. The end 🥴

PS I’ve got a painting in the KAAF prize. I won’t be able to make it but if you’re in Sydney the opening reception is tonight and the show runs from Friday, 22nd November 2024 to Friday, 17th January 2025 @kaaf_artprizePlease enjoy these digitally created indicative interpretations of what a painting would look like on a wall - hopefully I’ll be able to get there at some point during the run to get some real photos lol
