Our 121st book club pick and first pick of 2026 is “Kin” by @tayari Jones—and @oprah already sat down with her to speak all about the novel! The story follows Vernice and Annie, two young girls from Honeysuckle, Louisiana who spend their adolescence grappling with the reality of being motherless and how it has shaped them into who they are. This book about sisterhood and what it means to grow up as a woman in the South is one you won’t want to miss out on. Watch the latest episode of “Oprah’s Book Club” featuring Tayari and fellow book club members on @oprah’s YouTube channel (link in bio) or wherever you podcast.

I’m so behind on adding these posts but this one goes deep so bear with me. 🫶🏽 I picked up Kin at just the right time. Weeks before my mom suddenly decided it was time to sell her home, the one I grew up in in suburban Atlanta. After 50 some odd years. The house my father and her built. Kin is a story that then took on another life for me when I realised Tayari Jones was coming to NZ. No one ever comes here and yet, someone who spoke my language, a Georgia Peach, was coming way down here for a visit. I had the privilege of meeting her and seeing her speak at @aklwritersfest. But I can’t go home. It’s too broken and painful. So I read. Through her words I’ve never felt closer to home. Pictured are two rusted garden chairs at mom’s house.

POV: I played hooky on the last day of the Auckland Writers Festival. Waiheke Island was calling my name. (But now I have to figure out how to get back to the ferry before I miss my plane to Sydney!)
