Thank you @gillespeterson for including ‘Make Some Space’ - my DIY published story of the community at TRC @totalrefreshmentcentre in the Top Ten reads of 2019, alongside a list of clear bookish bangers 🙌🏼 by @nifmuhammad @normanjaymbe @thediabolicalliberties @joemuggs and others 📚 I want more connection, more communication, more celebration of people doing amazing stuff with minimal resources, more contextualising, more shouting about what is good ... more turning the spotlight into a floodlight. No-one gave me permission to the the book, and no-one needs to give you permission to do what TRC stalwart @alabaster_deplume calls ‘your awesome shit’. We can all do more doing. @sweetmachinepublishing @antennebooks

The Roll Call of Honour is different in each city. In Brussels, more of the beloved places people mentioned were in Brussels. In London they’re always from everywhere. After the @ezracollective show one of the staff added that there’s a massive free party scene in the city, but this doesn’t show up on the list. Two entries gathered from the band as they queued up at the venue’s (brilliant) staff canteen. One from me. The rest from musicians and staff at the community music and arts spot @globearoma and from people queueing up for the show and the #makesomespace talk. The excellent Caroline Music and @passaporta books are both within walking distance of @abconcerts for anyone going to see @angeltheoracle @illconsideredmusic @theon_cross @oscjerome @taxiwars @chassol_chassol who are all playing at AB’s jazz season between now and mid-December 🎶 💫 Also next month, 6th Nov: @church_of_sound @totalrefreshmentcentre are in the city for a special Church of Sound with @kahilelzabar 👑

I might start posting these more regularly - the Roll Call of Honour that I gather at each #makesomespace talk I do, which I then read out at the start of the talk. It’s a way of remembering that it’s DIY plural, not singular; and to honour the graft that goes into making these places happen 🧡 This one from last week @freewordcentre

Rich levels and layers here thanks to @stancepodcast who brought us together to talk about racism in nightlife @kartelbrown @chrystalgenesis Clive Curniffe of 1980s Brixton sound Fieldmarshall Muzik Power and @marciphonix. There’s still a lot of work to be done on this subject but in the meantime, just giving thanks today to the thousands of soundystem operators across the country that built the foundations for all the music genres and rich nightlife moments that followed. They are the godparents of jungle and garage and grime and dubstep and drill and much of the powerful and globally famous music we’ve built in this country.
