For me personally, one of the themes of the year for me has been truly starting to understand why Guy J fans have so much enthusiasm for his music and devotion to him as an artist. His fans don’t just like his music, they live for it. And I’m really starting to get why after sets like last night

@djsashaofficial weighs in on the creation of Northern Exposure…

‘We wanted to choose some stuff from our record collections that were classics to us.”

What were classics to Sasha and John Digweed were not the same anthems that were beginning to show up on every mix compilation around 1996, and because of this, I think more than any other mix album, Northern Exposure put Sasha and John’s taste front and center. This mix album wasn’t a bunch of released tracks, tracks like William Orbit’s remix of Morgan King’s ‘I’m Free’ and also Ultraviolet ‘Kites’ had been released for years and were the soundtracks to Sasha’s earlier residencies. What’s amazing is that they brought these tracks back in a way that was both a tribute to the tracks they loved but presented in a mix that was incredibly forward thinking.

I appreciate so many of you sharing your ‘Northern Exposure’ memories on yesterday’s post. It was really awesome to read about all your memories and what this album meant to all of you.

🎧NORTHERN EXPOSURE🎧

In his own words (from a 1996 interview), @djjohndigweed explains how the idea behind Northern Exposure was born.

When you look back at history, this mix album was truly a departure from the mix compilations that followed Renaissance: The Mix Collection, where the goal was to transport the listener inside the walls of a club. Northern Exposure was the opposite… a sonic journey filled with tracks that John and Sasha couldn’t play out in the clubs but wanted to respect in the form of a mix.

With this approach, John Digweed and Sasha changed everything. Northern Exposure was a mix that could follow you from your car to your friend’s house to an after hours party. It’s the idea that a mix could tell a story, and that story didn’t have to work only in a club.

You can see the impact of this mix everywhere. Most notably, I’m sure it’s responsible for Global Underground departure from capturing live club mixes like they do and GU001-GU005 into more sophisticated mixes constructed in the studio, especially with the more experimental CD1s that would emerge in the series, unironically starting with John’s GU006 in Sydney.

Northern Exposure CD1 is my favorite CD of any mix album ever made. When I learned that many of the tracks used were produced years before the album was released, it really blew my mind that an album that sounds so ahead of its time was made up of a lot of tracks that had been around for awhile. It just took the genius of Sasha and John to mold these tracks into a journey that sounds totally fresh.

🌊WAVE THEORY🌊

When you really think about it, a great club night is like a wave, and the clubbers on the dancefloor are the surfers. As the DJ, your job is to build the best waves for the clubbers to ride.

When I think back to my favorite club nights, they all adhere to Wave Theory.

Stage 1: Recognition

- Out in the lineup, surfers see a wave forming and get into position. Through taste and selection, the job of a warm-up DJ is to build up a wave that the surfers on the dance floor want to ride.

Stage 2: Drop-In

- It doesn’t have to be the first track the headlining DJ plays, but early on in the set, there’s always that one track that opens everything up and has the entire club riding the same wave. @djjohndigweed is the master at this. His opening sequence is always very different patient, but when he plays that specific deep groove, everyone is riding the same wave.

Stage 3: The Barrel

- This is what the whole night builds up to… Peak Time. Water is crashing all around you. Chaos everywhere. The music is driving and full of power. But you’re in the pocket, in the tube of the wave, in complete control.

Stage 4: Conclusion

- @dannytenagliaofficial says a great club night always has to have a beginning, middle, and end, and there has to be a conclusion that leaves clubbers on a high note while giving them the opportunity to reflect on the wave they just rode.

Wave Theory isn’t a rigid template, but just a way any DJ can think about the flow of a great club night.

When you look back on the history of progressive underground music, different fusions of sounds are at the forefront of the scene at different times. And after listening to so many mix compilations from the late 90s, the progressive trance sound served as the vertebrae to so many great sets.

Here, we have @djsashaofficial dropping the needle on Van Bellen’s ‘Let Me Take You (On A Journey) to very intimate club (I believe it was called Logic LA) in 1997 in Santa Monica, California.

Two hours of this set were recorded and aired on Groove Radio 103.1FM on December 21, 1997 if you wanted to check out the whole set.

🎧AAHZ RARE FOOTAGE🎧

If you want a taste of what the early 90s Orlando scene was like, this is for you.

In this clip, we see Resident DJ Dave Cannalte in the DJ booth at The Beacham Theater for the Aahz Unity IV party. While it’s not covered consistently in the history of underground music, Orlando experienced its own Second Summer Of Love in parallel with the UK in 1988, and by 1991, Aahz was one of the best club nights in the world, supported by claims of clubbers both local and international, as well as the fact that Sasha and John Digweed both made their first-ever US appearance in Florida (whether that was at Aahz or Simon’s in Gainesville I’m not entirely positive).

The craziest thing I realized is that this clip is taken a full year before Renaissance would open in the UK, just to show you how Florida was really helping develop what the progressive underground sound would become.

In this clip, you can hear Resident DJ Dave Cannalte hammering the iconic Florida Breaks sound. While Kimball Collins’ ‘United DJs of America’ mix album would cement his association with Aahz around the globe, local clubbers hold Dave Cannalte with the same regard, and he’s one of the DJs I would love to interview most, so if you see this @dave_cannalte, there is an open invitation for a podcast episode.

🎧SASHA AND JOHN DIGWEED🎧

I’ve seen clubbers write literal paragraphs about the dynamic between @djsashaofficial and @djjohndigweed, but in this clip, Digweed explains the magic in his own words.

‘It’s hard to describe how Sasha and I work so well together. It’s just like a mutual love of the same music…’

I think we all have that mate where music stands at the center of the friendship, and those friendships can last a lifetime. But rather than play each other tracks back and forth, Sasha and John invite thousands on the dancefloor to join the session.

This interview was recorded in 1996 off the back of the release of Northern Exposure. The dynamic between Sasha and John has been placed under a microscope for decades, with clubbers feeling the need to pledge their allegiance to one or the other. And while their DJ partnership and the residencies that followed shaped a new path for this sound, the magic of their sets might lie in the fact that they’re just two mates sharing new music with each other every time they step in the DJ booth, and if you have that same friend in your own life, you know how much fun that can be.

The question doesn’t have to be ‘Sasha or John?’… because ‘Sasha and John’ has always been the answer. LETS GO 🔥
