The best part of my job is connecting designers in the US with craftspeople in Thailand, and I had so much fun producing @pernbaan’s latest collaboration between @merchant.christopher and @chuanlhong_ceramic.

The designs that emerged are hybrid forms that bear the marks of many different hands along the way.

SUTHEP MIRROR - Designed by @bowenliustudio for PERN BAAN

The Suthep Mirror Collection was developed following Bowen’s visit to PERN BAAN’s studio in Chiang Mai, where she spent several days in Doi Suthep mountain overlooking the city. Inspired by shifting cloud formations and atmospheric conditions, Bowen developed a textured surface language that was later cast in brass on the outskirts of Bangkok.

Over the weekend we got to experience something really special when the amazing Phra Kyow Wong Marma came to our house for a ทำบุญขึ้นบ้านใหม่ i.e. new house blessing ceremony as is customary here in Thailand

I’ve been going to all kinds of Buddhist ceremonies since I was a kid but I never fully understood the significance of any of them. So it was a real privilege to receive a ‘Dhamma talk’ from Phra KK who is well known in Chiang Mai for his ability to give Buddhist teachings in English. He explained to us the symbolism of the ceremony and the importance of having strong pillars in the house.

Thank you Nico for helping to organize and to my family for joining us - so lucky we were able to do this the day before my Mom flew back to the US! I also loved meeting Phra KK’s students from Mahachulalongkonrajavidyalaya Buddhist University who tagged along. The house is full of ‘boon’ (merit) now 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Mega grateful to have finished taking care of last week’s fulfillment center debacle with a day and half to spare. I took a quick road trip up to Zion + Valley of Fire national parks and was blown away.

Our country is a sh!t show these days and our current govt is brutal and unintelligent, but what the National Park service has preserved and built over the last century is awe inspiring. Growing up in New England I never had a chance to see nature like this, but hikes like the one in that first pic are really stirring for the soul.

Zion also felt like the perfect setting to reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of having a small design biz - some thoughts in slide 3 if you’re interested ✌🏼

Running a small design business when sh!t hits the fan - Vegas edition.

What a bizarre week. I flew from Chiang Mai to Vegas and back again (with two 14 hour layovers in Seoul) to go and fix a huge mess that our fulfillment partners created.

A couple of weeks ago the 3PL we’ve been using in the US just imploded, stopped shipping out orders and wouldn’t answer emails or phone calls. I ended up booking a last minute flight to Vegas to clean up their mess, as we had 72 lamps that needed to ship out to customers and it felt like our inventory was being held hostage.

In the 15 years that I’ve owned a design business I’ve done a lot of crazy things to stay afloat, but this experience takes the cake. I’m so exhausted from this trip, out thousands of dollars and lost a week of work, but I’m feeling relieved that all of our orders are safely en route to our customers now 🙏🏼

Thanks so much to everyone who participated in our fundraiser for Loong Boonmee and the Ban Pa Ao brass workshop. Yesterday he received his diagnosis, and we’re hopeful that with the right treatment plan he’ll make a recovery over the next 6 months and eventually be able to return to leading the Ban Pa Ao team.

The funds we raised together will cover some of his medical costs and also help keep the workshop operational while he focuses on recovering.

This community has always meant a lot to me personally. When I first moved to Thailand and didn’t know where I fit in, Loong Boonmee was the person who helped me believe that the idea behind @pernbaan - connecting people from different parts of the world through craft and design - was actually possible.

Over the next year @pernbaan will be exploring the possibility of hosting our first in-person craft tour in Ban Pa Ao. I’m hoping that these kinds of intimate, in person experiences can become one way to help carry this craft knowledge into the future.
