“LOCKED IN SCREEN”

3-channel installation and an interactive video game, 16:9, 2024, 2024

“Hikikomori” (jap: to withdraw, to close oneself off) is a current social phenomenon in which people withdraw into self-imposed isolation for fear of social contact or social pressure. The “locked in screen” project attempts to raise public awareness of their existence and make it possible to experience their reality in an installative and virtual way. The video game consists of three levels that reflect the everyday life of a hikikomori person: the outside world with unbearable social interactions, the game world as a virtual refuge and the real world with their own four walls, the actual place of retreat.

My take on a 2-color experimental risography workshop guided by @na___toro at @raumklasse_udk wise24/25

Illustration & sketch inspired by E. M. Forster’s sci-fi short story ‘The Machine Stops’…

“Imagine, if you can, a small room, hexagonal in shape, like the cell of a bee.”
-
“Do you not know four big stars that form an oblong, and three stars close together in
the middle of the oblong, and hanging from these stars, three other stars?”
-
“The four big stars are the man’s shoulders and his knees.
The three stars in the middle are like the belts that men wore once, and the three stars
hanging are like a sword.”
-
“[…]I will speak of it in a minute, — the sun shining into it, not brilliantly but
through marbled clouds, — the peace, the nonchalance, the sense of space, and, brushing
my cheek, the roaring fountain of our artificial air!”
