A quarter of stroke survivors are of working age.

Cliff Donaldson is one of them. After two strokes in January 2023, that had affected his speech and mobility, Cliff had to cut his work hours and take home a reduced salary.

Following this, his employer at the time, Fraser Partners Ltd hired a new, younger site manager, and informed Cliff that his employment with the company would come to an end in September 2023.

He had worked with Fraser Partners Ltd since 1986.

Cliff said, ‘never in a million years’ did he expect to be told in a regular weekly meeting that his employment was coming to an end.

‘It was such a shock to me that after 40 years of association with the company that I was let go.’

Cliff said he was extremely disappointed, and his mental health suffered ‘tremendously’.

‘I didn’t know if I had a future.’

‘When you have a stroke, it changes your life, you wonder: “How am I going to look after my family?”

‘You have no income, you don’t have a job. You wonder where the next step is coming from.’

‘I have so much to give still. I’m in counselling at the moment and my physical condition has been improved in the last two years,’ Cliff added.

‘I hope the counselling will help me return to my usual self, but that could take time.’

Cliff was supported in his case by the @EqualityCommissionForNI.

Geraldine McGahey of the Equality Commission said, ‘Employers need to be aware of their obligations, they must fulfil their obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act.’

‘A good employer would tell an employee like Cliff: “This is what I have to do with you, this is how we’re going to work together” – because they have an obligation to make reasonable adjustments to help that employee stay at work.

Cliff’s case was settled for £100,000 without admission of liability.

A spokesperson for Fraser Partners Ltd, told the BBC they ‘strongly deny the claims made but chose to settle in order to avoid a lengthy legal process’.

Stroke survivors have a right to work, and should be supported by their employers to make reasonable adjustments.

I spy with my health-conscious eye, something beginning with S... 🧐

The answer should be obvious, but if not, a routine eye test might be able to help!

By applying AI software to images taken during a standard eye examination, researchers at @DundeeUni have found a way to predict a person’s risk of a cardiovascular event—like a heart attack or stroke—within a decade, with 70% accuracy.

How have they done it?

Eye scans provide a unique window into cardiovascular health. The blood vessels at the back of your eyes are clearly visible, along with any signs of narrowing or blockages.

So it makes sense: if those vessels show signs of damage, there’s a good chance that blood vessels elsewhere in your body—like in your brain—might be similarly affected.

That’s where AI comes in. It can spot subtle changes in eye health between individuals and assign a personalised stroke risk score in less than a second, based on what it sees.

With this information, doctors could recommend lifestyle changes or medications to those most at risk, potentially preventing thousands of strokes every year.

We often talk about the downsides of AI, but here’s a clear upshot! Maybe we should start calling it A(eye)? 👁️👃👁️

Every day in the UK, 240 people wake up to the catastrophic impact of a stroke.

It’s a traumatic, life-changing event that robs survivors and their families of the life they knew.

It can leave people unable to move, see, speak or even swallow. Survivors can also be left with personality changes and depression.

There are also many people like Pope Francis, who do not survive.

Pope Francis sadly died from a stroke followed by heart failure at 7:35 on Monday morning, aged 88, the Vatican has announced.

A stroke can affect anyone at any time, with devastating results.

Pope Francis has requested a simple burial ‘without particular decoration’ beneath a Rome church.
